Plenty of kids – and adults – have dreamed about entering the world of the Star Wars franchise. But according to the director of the saga’s most recent output, The Last Jedi, that level of whimsy has proved to be very effective for one of the film’s cast members.

Rian Johnson recently spoke to Variety about John Boyega, who will reprise his role as Finn in The Last Jedi. As Johnson explained, Boyega’s genuine excitement towards playing the part will be felt in the film.
“There’s this inner kid to John on the set,” Johnson explained, “that’s just so excited about playing a Star Wars character and thinks it’s really, really cool. That shines through on-screen like a laser.”
After audiences all across the world were first introduced to Finn in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many have wondered if his arc in December’s The Last Jedi will do him justice. But according to Rian Johnson, Boyega also brings a dedication to fine-tuning Finn’s overall storyline.
“We were on the same page.” Johnson revealed. “We wanted this to be the movie where his character strengthens — not just by becoming a better-drawn character — but by literally finding his strength and discovering what he believes in.”
Fans have already received some hints about Finn’s storyline in The Last Jedi – between the character’s emotional growth to his high-stakes ‘dark mission’ with new character Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran). How his adventure will actually unfold onscreen has yet to be seen.
The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.
