When the Season 2 finale of Rick and Morty aired in October 2015, Mr. Poopy Butthole explained to viewers during the after-credits scene that the third season would would probably come out in a year or a year and a half. However, fans had to wait much longer than that. But it was totally worth it!

Taking everyone by surprise, with no official announcement leading up to it, Adult Swim debuted the Season 3 premiere on April Fools’ Day — running the 22-minute-long episode (not including the non-canonical sketches) on a loop for hours.

In it, we got to see Rick escape the mental and physical prison the Galactic Federation had him in, using his ingenuity and fearlessness; take down the Federation, turning a 1 into a 0; destroy the Citadel of Ricks, transporting it in the middle of a Galactic Federal prison; go nuts for McDonald’s Szechuan teriyaki dipping sauce, which was offered for a limited time by the fast food chain to promote Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan; and get revenge on his son-in-law, purposely manipulating Beth so that she would leave Jerry for good.

Tommy Scott, a concept art/background designer, has released a small sampling of the artwork he produced for the first episode of the third season. In our slideshow, you can view his background designs for Seal Team Ricks’ spaceship, Shoney’s and Rick’s garage (as it looked in 1989).

Rick and Morty is Adult Swim‘s most scientifically accurate animated comedy. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, it catalogues the bizarre misadventures of a bored scientific genius/drunkard and his socially awkward grandson, Morty. Their exploits tend to have unintended consequences for Morty’s dysfunctional family, especially his unfailingly mediocre father, Jerry. Watch Rick and Morty battle everything from interdimensional customs agents to Cronenberg monsters.

The cast features Justin Roiland as both Rick Sanchez and his grandson, Morty; Sarah Chalke as Rick’s daughter, Beth; Chris Parnell as Rick’s son-in-law and Beth’s husband, Jerry; and Spencer Grammer as Rick’s granddaughter and Beth and Jerry’s daughter, Summer.

Shoney’s!

Shoney’s, the Nashville-based restaurant chain that operates primarily in the Southern United States, got a nice plug in the premiere, as it was used in the opening scene. It starts with Rick, Morty, Beth, Summer, and Jerry dining inside of the family-friendly restaurant, just as Rick finishes telling them how he escaped an alien prison. However, Rick is still very much in prison, having his brain manipulated by the Federation. He’s aware of it, and to prove that he’s on to them, he tells Jerry to take off his clothes and fold himself twelve times. When Jerry only manages six folds, Rick knows for sure (and feels insulted) that the Federation only shelled out enough money for a Series 9000 Brainalyzer.

Rick’s Garage (1998)

Within Rick’s mind, we get to a 1998 version of his garage. Rick and the Galactic Federation agent (voiced by Nathan Fillion) go back there — after a McDonald’s detour — to see the moment in which the mad scientist discovered inter-dimensional travel, built the portal gun, and his wife died. However, it is later revealed that this is just a false memory Rick created to gain control of the Brainalyzer — allowing him to transferring his mind into the Galactic Federation agent and escape.

Seal Team Ricks’ Ship

Shortly after transferring himself into the agent’s body, Seal Team Ricks dropped into the prison where Rick is being held captive. They shoot up the Federation agents and Rick’s original body. Rick then transfers his mind into one of the Seal Ricks and takes out the rest of the special operations force. Once everyone is dead, Rick grabs the rope and ascends to Seal Team Ricks’ spaceship.
