Tonight, Riverdale's freshman season officially came to a close. And while much of the mystery surrounding Jason Blossom's murder - which has plagued the town for the entire season - has been mostly resolved, many more secrets still remain. And after the explosive final scene of the episode, an entirely new mystery is shaping up.
In the closing minutes of the finale, Archie (KJ Apa) went to meet his dad Fred (Luke Perry) at Pop's Diner. Archie briefly went into the bathroom, and when he came back into the diner, he found a masked man attempting to rob the store. The mystery figure attempted to strangle Pop, and then - presumably - shot Fred when he and Archie tried to intervene.
While Fred's fate going into the sophomore season is currently unclear, the other significant mystery is who that masked man was. At first glance, his wardrobe indicates that he easily could be a member of the Southside Serpents, as their unofficial uniform usually consists of leather and plaid. But a recent tweet from Archie Comics caught our attention, and made us wonder if there's something more at play with this mystery man's identity.
The tweet, which you can see below, promotes one of Archie Comics' digital series: The Black Hood. And it's safe to say that there is a pretty significant similarity between his outfit and what the masked man was wearing on Riverdale.

For the uninitiated, Black Hood is a vigilante superhero who was established in the Archie Comics (then MLJ Comics) canon in 1940. Usually depicted as a skilled detective and fighter, the character became a huge success, even earning his own radio show. While Black Hood's alter-ego and origin have gone through multiple iterations in the decades since, a majority of them factor into the world of crime.
The similarities between the masked man and the most recent adaptation of Black Hood just seemed too prominent to be a coincidence. When asked about the parallels, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told ComicBook.com the following:
"I like to say that there are no accidents. So yeah, it's possible that that is an homage to the Black Hood."
Whether or not the masked man will actually adopt that title is yet to be seen. But Aguirre-Sacasa teased that the gunman will be christened with "a very specific name" early in the Riverdale's second season.
Regardless of who ends up being the masked man - and whether or not he is officially Riverdale's version of the Black Hood - his involvement in the finale certainly sets up a whole new mystery for season two.
Archie (KJ Apa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) continue to grow closer. Betty (Lili Reinhart) is tired of her family acting as if nothing has happened and confronts her mother. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) finds himself in an unexpected situation, leaving Archie and the gang scrambling. Hermione (Marisol Nichols) makes Fred (Luke Perry) an offer that seems too good to be true. Meanwhile, the truth about Blossom's family business is revealed leaving Cheryl (Madelain Petsch) to take matters into her own hands. Madchen Amick and Ashleigh Murray also star.
