It sounds like Riverdale will be bringing along a rather ominous new character when the show returns for its sophomore season this fall.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa recently shared a childlike crayon drawing of Riverdale characters Cheryl and Jason Blossom standing next to the Sugar Man – a tall man with a striped shirt, a bag of sugar, and a grimace on his face. You can check out the photo below.

Although the word “sugar” has factored into Riverdale – and the larger Archie lore – quite a bit, there isn’t a specific character dubbed the Sugar Man within Archie Comics. Some fans have begun to speculate that the moniker simply belongs to some sort of drug dealer similar to how the Blossom patriarch, Clifford, used his maple syrup business as a front for drug trafficking.
But for fans of a more frightening corner of the Internet, the name Sugar Man has a completely different connotation. Which brings us to…
The “Real” Sugar Man
Aย Creepypasta-like urban legend by the name of “Sugar Man”ย first came to light on Redditย over a year ago.ย According to Redditย user chokingmn, the Sugar Manย is a supernatural creature whoย creeps into houses to eat sharpened candy canes – as well as, occasionally, human flesh.
He’s got a bulbous little body, short and fat, almost round, with a sharp nose better at smelling than a dog. He follows that nose through the snow, but he gets cold and needs the warmth of the houses. He slips into them easier than a mouse, he’s done it for so long that he doesn’t even need to think how anymore. His tongue is long, longer than a dog or a snake and it’s sharp, flicking out, looking for the sugar.
The thought of a supernatural being entering the fold on Riverdaleย shouldn’t come as a surprise as Aguirre-Sacasaย revealed the plans to introduce those elements to ComicBook.com back in May.
At this point, it certainly isn’t out of the question that Riverdaleย spend some time focusing on a terrifying tall tale from Cheryl’s past,ย especially with the show having a much longer second season. After all, Aguirre-Sacasaย recently revealed to us that the show’sย second outing will be much scarier than the first. Let’s just hope the people of Riverdaleย follow his advice and lock their doors.
Before You Go
