Outsiders Series Unable To Secure New Network Home Following WGN America Cancellation

The WGN drama Outsiders will not be picked up by another TV station or streaming service, despite fans' and creators' hopes.

Peter Tolan, the series' executive producer, broke the news on his Twitter account Wednesday.

"Apologies to our great, supportive fans, but we could not find a new home for the Farrells. GGY Forever!" he tweeted.

He then went on to lay out the real reason the show, which centered on a family living away from civilization in the Appalachian mountains, was originally canceled.

"This was an extremely unusual situation that had nothing to do with ratings (obviously), and everything to do with business and timing," he said. "Tribune, WGN's parent company, is looking for a buyer. The company is not sure if a new owner will want to be in the business of producing content, so they canceled our show.

Tolan then went on to explain why hope has been lost for locking down a new season. The trouble is that the Outsiders cast, which includes David Morse; Ryan Herst and Kyle Gallner, needs new contracts, but it's too much of a risk to sign them with no new network established.

"And in terms of a new home [for the series that was] very difficult because the actor's contracts came up for renewal, but without a new home in place, those contracts could not be renewed without serious financial exposure by Sony," he said. "So it was business and timing that did us in."

The show, which aired two seasons, had a devoted fan base. Even its actors were enamored with its subject, which focused on the uncivilized family's battle to stay independent from society.

"I think that's really what is so great about the show," Gallner said in a previous interview. "There is a grey area. I can totally understand why the town is upset and want the Farrells gone, and I can also side with the Farrells and their fight to keep their home."

Tolan ended his tweet thread by thanking fans for their enthusiasm for a possible third season, and let them know their pleas didn't go unheard.

"God bless you all for caring so much," Tolan said. "Really. It makes all the work so worthwhile. Bless you all, and GED GED YAH!"
