Dexter: Resurrection’s Final Line Is a Perfect Response to the Show’s Mistakes

Dexter: Resurrection‘s season finale concludes with the perfect final line that seems to be a direct response to fans. If you’ve watched Dexter since at least 2013, you’ve likely been disappointed once if not twice with how this show has tried to end things. The Dexter series has had two controversial endings that left fans furious. The original show ended in 2013 after an already rocky season and left fans unfulfilled after Dexter Morgan faked his death and sent himself into exile as a lumberjack in the pacific northwest. It wasn’t very definitive, but was done at the request of Showtime which wanted to leave the door open for a return in the future.

Nearly a decade later, the series was revived for a limited series known as Dexter: New Blood. Although the show started strong, many felt the ending was rushed and as a result contrived. With Dexter Morgan left to die in a snowy forest, many assumed that would be the end for the serial killer vigilante and fans weren’t happy with how he met his demise, especially after just getting him back. However, Dexter: Resurrection has brought him back from the brink of death and set the foundation for a big future for the character.

Dexter: Resurrection Makes a Promise to Fans in the Last Scene

The first season of Dexter: Resurrection went off without a hitch, achieving critical acclaim and record setting viewership with its premiere episodes. That viewership likely only continued to grow and we’ll probably hear more about that in the coming days after the finale’s views are tallied. It seems to be what most people wanted from a Dexter successor and the show is keenly aware of that. In the season finale, Dexter takes to the Upper New York Bay in Leon Prater’s yacht to dispose of the billionaire’s body. He takes a minute to reflect on his journey this season through his inner monologue before concluding with one final, poignant line.

“This is who I am, what I am,” he says. “I’m Dexter Morgan. I’m exactly who I need to be. Exactly who you want me to be.”

With that last line, Dexter Morgan turns to the camera and speaks to us, the audience. Rarely does the character ever break the fourth wall and address the audience in such a direct fashion, but this was different. It’s also arguably one of the most important moments of the show. It’s both Dexter and the writers acknowledging that there’s a rocky history with the character. They veered off-course a few times and went in directions the fans didn’t want. Some people didn’t want to see too much self-loathing or see Dexter abstaining for serial killer as a punishment for his deeds. They want to see him hunting down killers and taking down the worst of the worst.

It feels like a promise for future seasons of Dexter: Resurrection as well. They’re going to give the fans what they want and give us the Dexter that they want to see. That does raise the question of how this will all get wrapped up when this show finishes. The writers seemed keen on holding Dexter accountable for his crimes in past iterations, but maybe they’ve realized fans don’t really want to see that unless it can be done in a smart way. Perhaps Dexter will get to drive off into the sunset on a new boat. It doesn’t mean he can’t suffer, as Batista’s death shows he can still be held somewhat accountable for things.

Dexter: Resurrection sets up a second season pretty well by empowering Dexter with all of Prater’s files on other serial killers. So, the show is going to indeed give fans exactly what they want by having him hunt down other baddies and put them in their place.
