Futurama Producer Teases the Show’s Next Series Finale

Futurama has returned to Hulu with a brand new season of the animated series, and executive producer David X. Cohen teased a little bit more of what to expect from the show’s next potential series finale. Futurama recently debuted Season 13 of its run with Hulu, and has already confirmed that Season 14 of the series is now in the works for a release in the near future. But that also means it’s facing the unique problem of potentially needing yet another series finale after it has delivered finales time and time again in the past. A problem that’s only getting tougher to solve.

As part of the celebration for Futurama Season 13’s premiere with Hulu, ComicBook got the chance to speak with series executive producer David X. Cohen all about the episodes. Following Cohen’s comments about the show’s next potential series finale at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 earlier this Summer, Cohen explained that it’s becoming “much harder” compared to earlier on thanks to all of the developments for the characters over the years. But also teased an emotional episode for Fry coming our way.

“It’s a problem, which is fairly unique in television history,” Cohen began when addressing needing multiple series finales. “Not a lot of shows that have been on and off five times, six times. We have ten this year on September 15th, ten next year already guaranteed. So we’re not in any emergency situation now, but we have already been writing the finale for next year, 2026, as another possible series finale. Which will be our sixth, I believe where at the time we wrote it, it could have been our series finale.” As Cohen explained, it’s getting tougher to find those ending points.

“So yes, it’s getting much harder,” Cohen continued. “Early on usually we would lean on Fry and Leela, what does their future hold? Now that we know a little bit more about that, we want to keep that bittersweet tone. I never want to say we’re gone forever. I like to think the characters live on whether we’re seeing them or not. But I do like to end on with some genuine emotion.” Finally, Cohen then teased a little bit more about that next potential series finale, “So next year we do delve a bit into Fry’s childhood, which is another area that has been pretty emotional I think in some other episodes. I think it works pretty nicely.”

What Does This Mean for Futurama’s Future?

Hulu

As Cohen points out, Futurama is in a very unique space as the creative team has had to craft multiple series finales as the show has been cancelled and revived a few times over the course of the decades so far. But what makes the show special is the fact that the team cares to end the show in an emotionally satisfying way in the first place. It’s not something an animated sitcom like Futurama even needs to do, but it’s done so time and time again.

Each of the series finales that fans have gotten over the years both felt like endings, but as Cohen also noted, felt like the characters would still live on with new adventures. It’s made the show perfect for its multiple revivals like with this new streaming era with Hulu, and there could be even more on the way after Season 14. But if that turns out to be it, Futurama‘s ready for another end.
