For almost a year now, Riverdale has taken fans of the Archie Comics world on a pretty wild ride. And according to Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes, the show’s Betty and Veronica, there are some pretty interesting places that their characters could continue to go.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Reinhart and Mendes were asked what plotlines they would write for their Riverdale characters. As Mendes revealed, she would like to see Veronica’s more vulnerable side in a pretty unique way.
“I want to see [Veronica] challenged.” Mendes explained. “I want to see her at her breaking pointโฆ I love strong characters and they’re fun to play, but I think we’ve seen a lot of strong Veronica. It would be interesting to see her in a different light. I want to see her weak and defeated. I want to see her fail.”
On the flip side, Reinhart said that she would write some sort of less stressful situation for her version of Betty Cooper. Considering just how much Betty has gone through thus far in Riverdale‘s second season – including frequently talking to a serial killer, and breaking up with her boyfriend several times – Reinhart would like to see Betty genuinely enjoy herself.
“I want to see [Betty] have a good time.” Reinhart revealed. “Maybe not having phone calls on the reg with a serial killer, you know? I want her to let her hair downโand not just as a reaction to being depressed and stressed out. Betty didn’t even do Jingle Jangleโฆ I also want to see her explore her sexuality. She never gets toโshe’s always stressed! Poor girl.”
Considering what fans already know about Riverdale‘s midseason premiere, it’s a little hard to tell if Reinhart and Mendes will get their wishes. While the second half of the season will reportedly return “back to basics”, the shocking midseason finale seems to hint at Betty and Veronica enduring quite a lot.
As of the midseason finale, Veronica is now in on the shady business dealings of her parents, even though the audience still doesn’t know what exactly they are. Meanwhile, the midseason finale ended with Betty appearing to realize that the Black Hood mystery is far from over.
Riverdale returns from midseason hiatus on January 17th, 2018.
