Daredevil: Born Again was a major hit for Marvel Studios, earning significant acclaim from both critics and fans. In addition, the series successfully reintegrated the beloved Marvel Netflix era into the official Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, a move celebrated by longtime viewers. Finally, viewership numbers were strong enough that a third season of Born Again entered active development even before the second season’s scheduled premiere in March 2026. This success, however, did not come without serious complications behind the scenes. The show famously underwent a massive creative overhaul in the middle of production, which led to noticeable issues with pacing and tone in its first season. Now, Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio has revealed the crucial role he and co-star Charlie Cox played in convincing the studio to rethink its strategy.

“We had many, many conversations about the fact that we were on a train that we felt we needed to stop,” D’Onofrio said during a panel at LA ComicCon. “And it was a big decision to make for us to be truthful with the studio and with our bosses and with the producers.” The actor detailed how he and Cox were relentless in their efforts to course-correct the production. “Basically, our plan was just to give notes, give notes, give notes. We would talk about it, we were in on each of our own notes, we’d share emails, and send group emails, and none of it was working,” he explained. “They weren’t taking us seriously. And then we finally got the ear of whom we needed to get the ear of. And we were so lucky — unfortunately, it wasn’t lucky for other people — but the actors went on strike. And then, when that happened, our bosses, the guys who run the studio, were allowed to look at the 6 [episodes] we had shot. And that’s when they started [changing the series].”
The results of that studio reassessment were drastic. The initial vision for the show, described as a legal procedural with a lighter tone, was scrapped in favor of a direction that more closely mirrored the darker style of the original Netflix Daredevil series. Plus, original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord were let go, and Marvel brought in Dario Scardapane, who had worked on Netflix’s The Punisher, as the new showrunner. This creative pivot brought the show back to its gritty roots and fully embraced the established history of its characters. Furthermore, the ambitious original plan for a single, 18-episode season was also abandoned. Instead, the story was restructured and split into two separate seasons, allowing the Mayor Fisk storyline to unfold with more focus and deliberate pacing across a multi-season arc.
Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again Is Bound to Be Better

While the first season of Daredevil: Born Again ultimately earned its success, its fractured production is visible in the final product. The season’s inconsistent pacing and underdeveloped subplots are the clear hallmarks of a show that had to fundamentally change direction after filming had already begun. On top of that, the finished product at times feels like two different shows stitched together, a direct result of the mid-stream creative pivot from a procedural format to a serialized crime saga. Still, the fact that the season works as well as it does is a credit to the salvage operation. It also means the second season of Daredevil: Born Again is positioned to be a significant improvement.
With a unified creative team now in place from the outset, Season 2 will not be hampered by the internal conflicts that defined the first. Showrunner Dario Scardapane can now execute a cohesive vision from the very first day of production. This eliminates the need to course-correct halfway through, allowing for a more consistent narrative that is not forced to integrate mismatched footage from a previous version of the show. This singular creative focus, free from the friction of the first season, is the strongest indicator that the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’s best chapter is yet to come.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere in March 2026.
