While there will be a tables a ladders and a chairs match at the pay per view, AJ Styles will defend his WWE World Championship against Dean Ambrose in the only true TLC match on the card.
The TLC match originated at Summerslam 2000 when The Dudley Boyz, Hardy Boyz, and Edge and Christian first squared off in a bout that featured each team’s choice of weapons. The second at Wrestlemania 17 has long been considered the greatest of the genre, featuring a spot where Jeff Hardy performed a swanton splash off a 16 foot ladder.
This Sunday will mark the 19th TLC match in WWE history. Many memorable TLC matches have occurred since the original, but here are the 5 you likely forgot ever happened!
5. El Torito vs Hornswoggle
Technically, this was a WeeLC match. But, the premise was the same. This 2014 Extreme Rules miniature version of the classic match featured mini-referees, mini-announers andminiature ladders. I have to admit, the gag of seeing a 3ft ladder in the ring still works for me. The match included run-ins from the 3 Man Band and Primo and Epico before they started selling time shares. After all the shenanigans, it was Torito who put Hornswoggle through the table for the win.ย
4. Jerry Lawler vs The Miz
Instead of taking place at a TLC pay per view or even any pay per view,ย this TLC match took place on a Monday Night RAW. It occurred during the infamous Miz WWE championship reign. Back during the days when Alex Riley wasn’t so full of rage. Back when Jerry Lawler could still take a few chair shots without needing a doctor’s note. Yeah, probably best you forget about this one all together. Miz won, as if I needed to tell you.ย
3. Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit vs Edge and Christian, The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz
So, there’s a pretty good reason you don’t remember this one. The WWE would like to keep it that way. Just know this was a Fatal 4-Way Tag Team TLC Match for the WWF Tag Team Championship in 2001. Ok, I feel like we should move on.ย
2. CM Punk vs Ryback
During CM Punk’s historically lengthy title reign in 2013, he faced off againstย Ryback in a TLC match. The match was supposed to take place in 2012, but CM Punk’s surgery postponed the bout. You probably don’t remember this because the ending was rendered moot by the Shield taking out Ryback and more importantly, theย Rock showing up on RAW to kick off his feud with Punk.ย
Honestly, you didn’t miss much.ย
1. Kane vs The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray and Spike), Christian and Chris Jericho, and Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam
Once upon a time, Kane faced the 3 other teams who made the TLC match famous (sort of), all by himself, and won! In 2002, Kane’s partner, the Hurricane was taken out of commission in the back, so he was not even in this match. Kane was at it all by himself to retain the tag team titles. The other teams were made throughout the night, and all the men involved here put on a wonderful performance.
Some of these matches are forgettable and some you likely just forgot. But this one is worth your time!ย
