Next year, Marvel Studios will debut a couple out-of-this-world films, literally. The company is slated to roll out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, two films which promises to explore the cosmos of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The projects will play a big role in setting up Avengers: Infinity War, and to do that, it looks like moviegoers may soon meet a group of aliens known as The Elders.

According to Schmoes Knows, both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Ragnarok will feature The Elders of the Universe in some form or fashion. The site alleges that the group is who motivates Star-Lord to find his father, Ego the Living Planet. The sequel will feature at least four Elders: The Collector, Ayesha, and two unnamed figures played by Sharon Stone and Sylvester Stallone.
If you’re unfamiliar with The Elders, then you should know the group is comprised of some very ancient aliens. The extraterrestrials are all powerful, cosmic beings who stands as the oldest sentient creatures in the entire universe. As the last of their respective races, the Elders band together and monitor the happenings of the Milky Way galaxy to varying success.
Of course, fans of the MCU will already be familiar with one of The Elders, The Collector. The character debuted in the first Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 films and was played by Benicio del Toro.
As for how The Elders tie into Ragnarok, the answer comes down to Jeff Goldblum. The actor was cast as Grandmaster in the film, a character who stands as an exiled Elder in the comics. The site is reporting that Grandmaster is definitely considered an Elder in Ragnarok despite his rogue status, and Thor will apparently run into the being during some gladiatorial games. So far, there’s no word on whether the ruler will make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Some fans may be questioning why Ayesha is listed as one of The Elders. The character, who will debut in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has a complex history. Originally called Paragon, the being was artificially created by an organization known as Enclave. In the comics, she is the second such being to be made following Adam Warlock, a well-known character in the Marvel Comics who is directly involved with Thanos and his quest for Infinity Stones.
If the folks at Schmoes Knows are right about Alyesha/Paragon, then it looks like Marvel Studios will be altering the character’s origin for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. As such, it’s very possible the company may change or tweak whichever roles Stone and Stallone may be playing.
Of course, fans are interested to see how The Elders will feed into the upcoming Infinity War adaptation. The live-action blockbuster will feature dozens of superheroes as both The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy will star in the movie.
Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releases on May 5, 2017. Thor: Ragnarok will follow on November 3, 2017. The Avengers: Infinity War movies recently began production in Atlanta and are set for release in 2018 and 2019.
