When the Guardians Of The Galaxy made their big screen debut in 2014, fans fell in love with ragtag team of cosmic hooligans-turned-superheroes as they saved the Xandar from Ronan the Accuser’s twisted machinations. And while all of the characters had their affable charms, few resonated with moviegoers like Vin Diesel‘s Groot.

After his heroic sacrifice in the first film, the character returned as a baby to once again steal the audience’s hearts as his high pitched voice uttered the three-word catchphrase that’s since become iconic.
Though the first version of the character’s octaves had the trademark Diesel growl underscoring every utterance, it was surprising to hear Baby Groot‘s voice and a bit jarring to imagine those tones coming from the actor’s mouth.
But Diesel revealed to Entertainment Tonight that there was very little audio processing done to his voice to match the pitch necessary to make it sound like it was coming from Baby Groot’s mouth.
Apparently Diesel has been practicing using cartoony voices ever since he was a kid, which made his voice acting even more fitting for this second installment than it was for the first movie.

Diesel’s Groot has become an integral part of the film and it’s impossible to imagine anyone else’s voice bellowing from the talking tree. Even the version we see in the post-credits scene stands out.
It might be one of the easier paychecks Diesel will earn in his time as an actor, but it’s no less deserved.
