When the Webslinger swings into the theaters next month he'll finally be where he belongs, smack dab in the middle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After two different franchises where Spider-Man existed in his own bubble, he'll finally get to interact with other superheroes much like what was teased in Captain America: Civil War.
But this first movie in partnership with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures is not just the first film in a Spider-Man franchise, but the first step in kicking off a whole new series of movies. We've already gotten confirmation of Tom Hardy playing Venom in his own spinoff movie, but the symbiote isn't the only villain to get the spotlight.
A Hollywood Reporter profile about new Sony chief Tom Rothman indicates that the studio is planning projects based on both Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio, classic Spider-Man villains who have yet to appear on the big screen.
This is in place of the previous plan which would give the Sinister Six their own spinoff movie — that has since been scrapped as they hope to launch a bigger universe gradually instead of outright in one film.

The Venom movie is already moving forward and Sony is also in the stages of making Silver & Black, a film based on Spidey characters Black Cat and Silver Sable. They've already landed a director for that movie in Gina Prince Bythewood, who recently directed the Cloak & Dagger pilot for Marvel Television.
There's been some slight confusion and mixed messages regarding the inclusion of Spider-Man characters in the MCU — Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously indicated that Sony's plans were separate from their own and would not be included in their plans, while Spider-Man executive producer (and former Sony boss) Amy Pascal stated that they would exist in the broader Marvel Universe.
Perhaps they're just playing coy until a firmer plan comes to fruition, but it would be strange to see a world of Spider-Man characters without the Webhead involved in some capacity. It would also be strange to see Spider-Man straddle two worlds without any sort of recognition between the two.
Hopefully we learn more after Spider-Man: Homecoming releases in theaters on July 7.
