Crunchyroll’s Biggest Isekai Shocks With Surprise Return After 10 Years

The biggest Isekai now streaming with Crunchyroll has just shocked fans with a surprise return after ten long years, and it’s kicking off a huge new battle for the rest of the season. Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- has been one of Kadokawa’s biggest light novel turned Isekai anime sensations, and that’s been especially the case as the anime now celebrates its 10th anniversary. The fourth season of the anime is back in gear with its second half of episodes, and it’s on the cusp of a huge fight.

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 is now working its way through the Recapture Arc with its new episodes airing this Summer, but the latest episode just had one of its biggest shocks yet with the “return” of Rem for the first time in ten years. She had gone into a coma at the end of the first season following Gluttony’s attack, and she makes a special return to get Subaru ready to get back into the action.

Re:Zero Season 4 Finally Brings Back Rem, But There’s a Catch

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 13 sees Subaru dealing with a different version of the Sin of Gluttony within a strange white space. It’s revealed to be known as Og Ragna, the resting place for souls. It’s teased that Subaru had previously lost his memories in this space after being eaten by Gluttony, and he nearly succumbs to this all over again without some outside help. A version of Rem appears within this space and is able to reform herself thanks to the memories that Subaru had left over. And she gives him the motivation her so sorely needs.

Telling Subaru to stand up and to keep fighting, this is the first time that Rem has spoken any dialogue in the series since going into this coma at the end of the first season. It’s been ten long years since then, and if you don’t count her appearances in projects like Isekai Quartet, this is a return from Rem that fans have been wanting to see for a very long time. Which does further indicate just how big of a turning point that the anime is at this point.

What Does This Mean for Re:Zero’s Future?

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 has reached a turning point as now that it has kicked off the Recapture Arc, it’s time for Subaru Natsuki and the others to “recapture” all that they have lost against Gluttony. The Sin itself has made its move on the mysterious tower that all of them are in at this time, and it means there’s a massive physical threat that Subaru needs to overcome before he can even think about surpassing the trials in the tower.

But with Gluttony now moving into action, there’s a hope that Rem’s full return won’t be too far along from this point. She was brought to the tower with the hope of figuring out how to bring her back from her coma, and her existence within this mysterious space proves that she’s still out there for Subaru and the others to find. We’ll just have to see how the rest of the season goes as Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 finishes out its Summer with Crunchyroll.
