Attack on Titan‘s second season has wrapped after its long-awaited arrival, and the finale has anime fans flustered. The action-packed episode brought the tense sense to a sweeping end, but its inclusion of one speech from Mikasa has got shippers buzzing online. Towards the episode’s end, fans watched as the young soldier finally revealed her innermost feelings to Eren, and the speech has got fans thinking the girl just confessed.
In the finale, Mikasa and Eren find themselves at the foot of the Smiling Titan after the beast devours their mentor Hannes. The creature, which ate Eren’s mother so many years ago, has brought Eren to his knees in grief. The boy is about to lose himself to the feeling as rogue Titans overwhelm the Survey Corps which came to rescue him from a previous kidnapping scheme. But, before Eren can get lost in his head, Mikasa pulls him out with the following speech:
“Eren, that’s not true. Eren, listen, I need to tell you something. You’ve always been at my side. Thank you. You showed me how to live with purpose. And you – you wrapped this scarf around me.”
The scene frames Mikasa and Eren in a chaotic field filled with flowers and gore-spattered Titans. The mismatched feeling makes for a beautiful picture, and the image of Mikasa leaning in towards Eren with teary eyes has some fans convinced the girl was trying to kiss the boy. However, Eren stands up just before Mikasa can reach him and makes a vow to his childhood best friend.
“I’ll wrap that around you as many times as you want. Now and forever, as much as you want!” he promises.
For now, there is no telling where Eren and Mikasa’s relationship may go in the future. Not even manga readers have a clear grasp on how the relationship between the two soldiers will pan out. Eren and Mikasa grew up as close friends and even adoptive siblings once Mikasa’s parents were murdered. The pair have a close bond that borders on codependent, and the manga has yet to directly signal whether the protagonists may develop romantic feelings towards one another.
Still, with a scene like the one shown in the season two finale, it is easy to see how shippers could stan the anime couple. The rambling scene was the perfect mixture of fraught emotions and heart-pounding closeness. If Mikasa were to ever confess amorous love to Eren, then she should just reiterate the speech she just gave him with a few more kisses added.
