Chainsaw Man Creator Breaks Silence on Acclaimed One-Shot’s Live-Action

Tatsuki Fujimoto is one of the most celebrated manga creators in recent years. While he is best known for Chainsaw Man, he has also created Fire Punch and several acclaimed one-shots. One of his one-shots, Look Back, gained worldwide recognition in 2024 after its anime adaptation. The award-winning film became a global hit as it follows a heartbreaking story of two aspiring manga creators. Produced by Studio DURIAN, the gorgeous anime was praised for its nuanced story with emotional moments. Following the anime film’s success, a live-action adaptation was also confirmed. The film will hit Japanese theatres on September 11th, 2026, but hasn’t confirmed a global release date yet.

However, GKIDS will be bringing the live-action film to fans in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland soon after. The film is already making waves thanks to its excellent cast and crew, especially Hirokazu Kore-eda, Palme dโ€™Or winner and Oscar-nominated filmmaker, best known forย Shoplifters. He is serving as theย writer, editor, and directorย of the film. As the release date of the film draws near, Fujimoto got early access, and he’s more than impressed by the adaptation.

According to Oricon, Fujimoto shared, โ€œI was very happy because, without losing the tone of the original manga, the film was able to bring out the atmosphere that the original had while giving it a real sense of authenticity.โ€

Live-action adaptations are infamous for straying away from the original source, often leading to criticisms and fans’ complaints. While live-actions often take creative liberties with the original story, they are not always the best way to go about the story. Even a well-received adaptation like One Piece wasn’t exempt from that, and the number of changes made by Netflix is astounding.

However, while One Piece became a massive global hit, not many live-action adaptations become famous for the very same reason. Considering many such cases, Look Back is surely an exception for following the original tone of the manga as much as possible. While Fujimoto praises the film, he also implies that the film will have changes from the original source. Regardless, now that the creator has given it his approval, it’s all the more reason to look forward to it.

It’s available in both Japanese and English audio with subtitles in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French. Fans will also get several exciting bonuses such as an interview with the director and cast members, a 160-page book, and more. Even though two years have passed since the film’s debut, it continues to stay in the spotlight thanks to these new releases.
