Anime and manga fans have a reputation for being passionate about their favorite shows and series, but Netflix’s big new anime release doesn’t want a few over-the-top fans to ruin the fun for everyone. Over the past few weeks, Netflix subscribers have been unsettled and freaked out by The Summer Hikaru Died, based on the manga of the same name by Mokumokuren. The series follows Yoshiki and Hikaru, two teenage boys in a fictional Japanese village, after the latter dies in the forest and is replaced by a strange and potentially dangerous entity. The setting of The Summer Hikaru Died might be fictional, but it was inspired by real places in Japan, and, as is always the case, some anime fans have gone a bit over the top in their explorations of said locations.

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for The Summer Hikaru Died recently issued an official notice to the fan base regarding the behavior of those traveling to the Mie Prefecture, where the story is set. “When visiting real-world locations featured in The Summer Hikaru Died, please be considerate of local residents and follow community rules,” began the post. “We also ask that you refrain from unauthorized photography or making social media posts of local shops, schools, private homes (including vacant ones), and other facilities without permission.”
Have The Summer Hikaru Died Fans Gone Too Far?
Despite the official notice from the show’s social media account, there haven’t actually been any reports of The Summer Hikaru Died fans causing disturbances in the Mie Prefecture. Judging by the final paragraph in the notice, nothing immensely serious has happened yet, with “unauthorized photography” appearing to be the worst of the behaviour.
It is also unclear exactly where these fans are going. The Summer Hikaru Died is set in the very real Mie Prefecture. However, the interconnected towns that Yoshiki and Hikaru actually live in are fictional. Have fans just been going to random towns in Mie and taking photos? Potentially.
New episodes of The Summer Hikaru Died are released weekly exclusively on Netflix. 10 episodes are currently available to stream. Season 1 of the series is expected to come to an end after 12 episodes, although this hasn’t officially been confirmed. It is also unclear whether there will be a Season 2, as Mokumokuren’s manga is also set to come to an end in late 2025.
