The trailer for Last Samurai Standing showcases the brutal action and fight choreography that fans of Shogo Imamura and Katsumi Tatsuzawa’s manga know and love. Based on Imamura’s novel of the same name, Last Samurai Standing‘s manga was first serialized in Kodansha’s Morning seinen magazine, and is still ongoing. The trailer teases the death game premise that our protagonist, Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), finds himself in. But the focus of the trailer is absolutely the bloody samurai combat that fans will undoubtedly love. Netflix’s live-action Last Samurai Standing begins streaming on November 13th. Check out the trailer below…

What Is Netflix’s Last Samurai Standing About?

Last Samurai Standing is set during the late 19th century, where the era of samurai was coming to an end following the introduction and adoption of firearms to Japan. Shujiro is one of 292 warriors, all competing in a brutal game with a staggering cash prize. The rules are simple: wear a wooden tag around your neck, and steal the tags of the other 291 warriors. The last samurai standing wins.

Michihito Fujii, Kento Yamaguchi, and Toru Yamamoto direct the series, with Kosuke Oshida producing. As well as playing the central hero, Junichi Okada is also a series producer as well as the action choreographer. Alongside Okada, the show also stars Riho Yoshioka, Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Taichi Saotome, and Yuya Endo.

The Last Samurai Standing manga is slowly becoming a fan favorite among seinen readers, and, judging by the first trailer, Netflix’s live-action adaptation is sure to impress. The streamer has a rocky history with live-action adaptations of anime and manga. There have certainly been some hits, like One Piece (although, even that series has its critics). But many of Netflix’s attempts at bringing manga/anime to life โ€” Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead โ€” have flopped with audiences and critics. Fans are hoping that Last Samurai Standing can continue the trend that One Piece set by bringing another great live-action manga adaptation to our screens.
