In the world of anime, movie fanatics have found themselves split. Last year, the film Your Name rose to the top of the box office in Japan and has continued to dominator the foreign market with its charm. Today, the critically acclaimed anime feature has raked in more money worldwide than Spirited Away, the magnum opus of Studio Ghibli. However, the movie has failed to break the latter film’s hold in Japan, but Your Name creeps closer to the domestic record each day.

Naturally, fans of the two films have begun warring over the record’s merit, but there is one man who has little time for the debate. Toshio Suzuki, a co-founder of Studio Ghibli and beloved producer, has spoken out about the new film’s records. And, for him, he’d be happy to see Your Name usurp Spirited Away.
Recently, the legend sat down for an interview with Shukan Bunshun. Suzuki praised the film first, saying, “The way the movie’s high autumn skies feel like they’re drawing you in left a deep impression.”
So, when he was asked how he felt about Your Name possibly overcoming Spirited Away‘s box office record in Japan, Suzuki kept with his gracious nature.
“If that day should come, I don’t think I’ll be sad…It feels nice to have the record, but I think it’ll be beaten at some point in the future, and really, isn’t it more interesting if something else does break the record?” he said.
If you are not familiar with Your Name, then you should know the anime feature is the highest-grossing film of 2016 in Japan. The film raked in more than $170 million at the box office since it debut in August. It is also the first anime feature outside of Studio Ghibli’s control to gross more than $96 million at the Japanese box office.
