Square Enix has provided a rare update for Kingdom Hearts 4 as the game continues its development. Announced all the way back in 2022, news on KH4 has essentially been nonexistent since its first trailer. Square Enix briefly broke this silence earlier in 2025 when it shared new screenshots from the project, but other than this, there’s still nothing substantial that has been said about the next Kingdom Hearts game for the better part of the past three years. Fortunately, for those dying for any news whatsoever on the game, it has now come about in the form of a new statement from director Tetsuya Nomura.

Speaking during a recent live stream, Nomura responded to fan inquiries about the status of Kingdom Hearts 4 at the moment. Nomura didn’t say much, but he did share that KH4’s development is “steadily moving forward according to schedule.” Nomura said that the same is true for Square Enix’s third entry in its Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. As such, despite the silence that continues to surround both games, Nomura made clear that there are no development struggles behind the scenes, which should put fans who have been worried about either title at ease.
What This Means for Kingdom Hearts 4’s Release Date

While it’s great to hear Nomura talk a bit about Kingdom Hearts 4, we still don’t seem to be any closer to knowing when the game will actually see the light of day. News on KH4 is so slim that Square Enix hasn’t even confirmed which platforms the game will be coming to. Because of this, a release in 2025, or even 2026, seems unlikely.
Going off the development timeline for Kingdom Hearts 3, the previous entry in the series was first unveiled in 2013 but didn’t launch until early 2019. If a similar timeline were to occur with Kingdom Hearts 4, this would mean that the project wouldn’t see the light of day until 2027 or 2028. Although still quite far off, a release in either of these years would make sense as it would allow Square Enix plenty of time to promote the game leading up to its launch, which is something that the publisher has also done with past installments.
Hopefully, in lieu of having to wait so long for Kingdom Hearts 4 to release, we’ll get more information on the game soon. Whether it be through a new teaser trailer, or even new screenshots/artwork, anything at this point would thrill Kingdom Hearts fans. With The Game Awards set to take place in early December, perhaps this venue will bring with it some more substantial news on the next entry in the iconic action-RPG franchise.
