New Halloween Has a Controversial New Take on Michael Myers (And It’s Been Retconned Before)

A controversial part of Michael Myers’ history is going to be brought back in a new entry in the Halloween franchise. Michael Myers is one of the simplest yet most terrifying characters out there. He is the archetype of slasher villains, often seen wielding kitchen knives, wearing a non-descript outfit (minus his signature mask), and he chases his prey in a relatively nonchalant fashion by refusing to sprint after them. All of that in more will be kept in tact in a brand new Halloween video game releasing next year, but the developers are taking some controversial creative liberties with the character to game-ify him.

There has been debate over whether or not Michael Myers is supernatural in the Halloween movies. This has largely been open to interpretation throughout his many iterations, even though he appears to defy the laws of human nature. He gets repeatedly shot, stabbed, set on fire, and takes some falls from heights that should at least weaken him. At the end of Halloween Kills, he’s beaten, shot, and stabbed by a mob, yet he rises back up and kills everyone. However, Halloween Ends did some to definitively end Michael’s reign as he is finally killed and has his body shredded by an industrial machine.

New Halloween Game Makes Michael Myers Explicitly Supernatural

Despite Michael Myers’ resilience, it is often seen as more interesting that his abilities be kept vague and ominous. It helps create the illusion of the boogeyman, something that is beyond explanation. With that said, a new video game from Illfonic titled Halloween will make Michael Myers explicitly supernatural. In the game, players can either play as a civilian who has to evade and escape Michael’s wrath or fill the jumpsuit of the infamous silver screen serial killer themselves.

For those who embody Michael, they’ll be given different abilities to give them the edge against their victims. The most notable example of this is an ability referred to as “Shape Jump”, which allows Michael to turn invisible and rapidly float around the map. This is the developer’s way of visualizing how Michael can inexplicably appear anywhere and always be right behind someone, despite the fact he is only ever seen slowly walking. It’s a clever way of making sure Michael can quickly move through the map, but it is also slightly controversial!

As already noted, Michael’s form has generally been kept ambiguous. However, there was one attempt to explicitly explain how he can be a human tank. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers controversially gave fans the rundown on Michael’s origins, explaining that he was cursed by a cult as a child and granted supernatural abilities that protect him. His ultimate mission is to kill and sacrifice his family, which is why he targets his sister, Laurie Strode. As for all of the other deaths? They’re more or less in his way.

Subsequent films, particularly the recent rebooted Halloween trilogy, have distanced themselves greatly from the more overt supernatural elements or ignored them entirely. Instead, Michael Myers is seen as more of a manifestation of evil in the recent trilogy rather than the product of a cult’s voodoo. However, this new Halloween video game appears to be depicting Michael in the most supernatural form we’ve ever seen.

Of course, this is just a video game and liberties have to be taken in order to keep it fun and interesting. The new Halloween game appears to be faithfully adapting the original films as much as possible with its overall vibe and aesthetic. Unfortunately, we will have to wait quite a while to play it as it isn’t due out until next fall.

Halloween will release on September 6th, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. What do you think of Michael Myers being more supernatural in this game? Leave a comment below and join the conversation now in theย ComicBook Forum!
