Everything in video games is leaking right now. Sometimes it’s hackers leaking everything and anything about the most anticipated game of all time. Sometimes it’s insiders leaking imminent announcements before they can surprise everyone. And sometimes it is developers and publishers accidentally leaking their own games and their own announcements. This time we have a case of the latter, and it involves a former PS3 exclusive series from the 2000s.

SteamDB has caught that on the backend of Steam: Japan-based studio Q-Games has been running a playtest for “PixelJunk Monsters 3,” aka the next PixelJunk Monsters game. Right now, because the leak is limited to Steam, only a PC version can be presumed, but it’s reasonable to also assume a PS5 version is in the mix given the series’ history and the platform its audience is most likely concentrated on. That platform being PlayStation.
2007 PS3 Exclusive
As an IP, PixelJunk debuted in 2007 with the release of PixelJunk Racers for the PS3 and the PS3 only. This game, as you may remember, was developed by Q-Games, but published by Sony. Sony was notably involved with the series from its inception until 2012, when it got off board. Meanwhile, in the same year, the second game in the series was released: PixelJunk Monsters. This was also a PS3 exclusive, at least for launch. It eventually came to other platforms.
Fast-forward through some other releases, PixelJunk Monsters 2 arrived in 2018, and by then the PlayStation exclusivity had shed, as evidenced by it releasing on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch at launch. Now, PixelJunk Monsters 3 is happening. It’s not been officially announced, but it has been officially leaked. And if its most immediate predecessor is any indicator, it will be a PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2 game.
The PixelJunk series has always been a niche series, and it’s only gotten more niche over time. That said, there is an audience for it, and Q-Games is a smaller operation that doesn’t need hits to sustain itself. In other words, it’s not surprising to see this release in the slightest.
What’s surprising is there are already semi-private playtests happening for it, indicating it’s decently far along in development, which in turn may signal an announcement is close. So far, though, there has been no comment from Q-Games on the leak, let alone the speculation the leak has created.
If this PS3 nostalgia does nothing for you, the good news is there is no short supply of PS3 nostalgia at any given point, and right now is no exception. To this end, one of the most popular PS3 games of all time was re-released last month, and was literally the best-selling game in the United States for the month of July. Meanwhile, just earlier this month, a classic PS3 RPG was re-released on Nintendo Switch.
