Square Enix Reportedly Bringing Back PS2 RPG Series

Square Enix is reportedly bringing back a PS2 RPG series and will unveil its return later this month, either at the rumored PlayStation State of Play or at Tokyo Game Show. The new report comes from well-known insider Dusk Golem, who is primarily known for scoops on Resident Evil and Capcom in general, but this time, he has information about Square Enix.

In a recent social media post, the industry insider relayed word that the surprise and sudden release of the Drakengard OST on Steam and Spotify last week was not a random occurrence, but rather meant to accompany and tease an announcement coming later this month involving the series. The report does not specify if this will be specifically a Drakengard game or a NieR game, as we heard earlier this year that a NieR Automata sequel is going to be revealed soon. For those who do not know, NieR is a spin-off of the Drakengard series.

About Drakengard

The history of Drakengard and NieR is a bit complicated. The former got its start back in 2003 via developer Cavia and publisher Square Enix. Cavia has been defunct since 2010. Meanwhile, released as a PS2 exclusive, Drakengard was not received that well, but over time became a bit of a cult-classic. Two years later, it got a sequel in 2005 in the form of Drakengard 2. Then came the spin-off, NieR, in 2010. These were made by the same pair. What followed was Drakengard 3 in 2013. By now, Cavia was closed down, so this release was made by fellow Japanese studio Access Games, which still exists, but primarily as a porting and support studio.

Through all of these releases, the series was very niche. This changed in 2016 when NieR Automata came out 2016 via developer PlatinumGames. NieR Automata was one of the best games of its year and has sold multiple millions of copies. However, while NieR is arguably a mainstream series now, Drakengard is not. Since then, there has been Nier Reincarnation and Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139โ€ฆ in 2021, the former a mobile game and the latter a remaster of the first NieR game.

The aforementioned OST release was for the first Drakengard game, so the Drakengard series may be about to get the re-release treatment, or at least the first game will. And the report from Dusk Golem specifically says Drakengard. However, the aforementioned new NieR game can’t be ruled out at this point.

At the moment of publishing, none of the implicated parties have commented on this new report and the speculation it has created. If this changes, we will update the story accordingly. In the meantime, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation on the Comicbook Forum. Would you rather a return to Drakengard games from yesteryear or a new NieR game?
