Fans don’t know how Adam Warlock will come to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they do know a bit about his casting now. Earlier this year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ended with a post-credits scene about the fan-favorite character. So, director James Gunn is happy to tease fans about how Adam will be cast.
During a recent interview with IGN, Gunn was asked point-blank whether Matthew McConaughey was approached to play the cosmic hero. The director shot down the rumor quickly as Gunn said the actor’s age doesn't line up with his vision of Adam.
“No, listen. I mean, I think McConaughey would be too old for the role,” Gunn explained.
“Adam Warlock is basically a baby because he is just being born. I get a lot of people giving me a lot of ideas for Adam Warlock online, but that guy is 65-years-old! How is that going to be Adam Warlock; He’s a baby! I got David Bowie all the time before David passed.”
While Gunn couldn’t say anything about the traits his iteration of Adam carries, the director did reveal one thing. The MCU visionary stressed his official take on Adam won't be similar to the original one he gave the hero in a treatment for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn has said Adam once played a major role in the sequel before he was written out, so the hero will be changed accordingly for his presumed debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Of course, comic book enthusiasts will be glad to hear Gunn’s comments about Adam. The character may created as a full-grown adult, but his mental state has not matured by the time he leaves his birthing cocoon. Adam stumbled through his first days in the galaxy with naive, childlike wonder - so it isn’t exactly wrong to call him a baby.
For now, fans will have to wait and see how the MCU winds up piecing the long-awaited character into it canon. Fans have been waiting to see the hero on the big screen for years now, so Marvel Studios better make sure its casting game is on-point when Adam is being screen-tested.
Fans will be able to watch the line over and over again when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits Digital HD on August 8, followed by Blu-ray and DVD on August 22.
