The quest for the Infinity Stones is about to begin.
As part of Marvel Legacy this November, Gerry Duggan will be joined by artist Marcus To on the newly retitled and renumbered Guardians of the Galaxy #146 and #147.
The issues kick off the new “Infinity Quest” arc which sees the Guardians going after the powerful cosmic artifacts. “There are two cosmic families have stakes in this: The Guardians, and the Cosmic Elders,” Duggan told ComicBook.com. “After [All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #10], some answers are revealed, but more questions are asked.”
“Infinity Quest” will see the Guardians gaining some strange bedfellows in the Nova Corps, but there’s a whole lot more in store as the story unfolds.
“This has been one of my favorite parts of our first Legacy arc with Marcus,” Duggans said. “I think the answer by the end of the story will surprise you. But you're in for cops, robbers, spies, Raptors, Guardians, heavy metal Ultron zombies and...Ant-Man.”
“Visually this has been really fun, as if we have the Guardians ‘playing’ cops,” To added. “The way they interact with all the other corps members is where all the drama lies, you don't know who can trust who, and who is trying to do the right thing while going about the wrong way.”
Joining the group on a more permanent, if not exactly official, basis is the most famous Nova of all, Richard Rider, who has a romantic history with Gamora.
“Rich is joining the title, if not an official member,” Duggan explained. “I rolled in characters on our Uncanny Avengers that didn't exactly get ID cards, but Rich has a very important part to play in our ongoing story for a while to come. As for Rich and Gamora, well, Gamora's not really feeling very...social of late.”
“We're seeing a team that is at odds with a lot of who they were and who they are now,” said To. “Peter and Rich's interactions at least are what you would imagine them being, bros."
When asked about the “interesting places” that this quest could lead the Guardians, Duggan said, “I think you hit the nail on the head. Interesting places. Hard to reach places. You never know where or when the Guardians will turn up.”
As for the possibly catastrophic consequences of assembling the Infinity Stones once again, Duggan said it's all a matter of perspective, and that, for one Guardian, this quest is personal.
“That all depends on your alignment, I suppose. Gamora has a personal quest to rescue a piece of herself from the soul stone," Duggan said. "We wish her all the best in her dangerous endeavor.”
Guardians of the Galaxy #146 and #147 goes on sale in comic book stores and digital comics storefronts in November.
