James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, revealed that he has been "thinking about" a solo film for Nebula.
Gunn, who is rather active on his social media accounts, respond to a question from a fan via Twitter by agreeing that Nebula should get her own standalone Marvel movie.
I have a few favorites myself, but I agree that Nebula should lead her own film - it's something I've thought about from the beginning. https://t.co/lyPAA6Hyxw— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) October 16, 2016
Karen Gillan is set to reprise the blue-skinned, cyborg assassin Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, who proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the first film. Although her boss Ronan was defeated, Nebule made it out alive.
We don't have many details regarding her role in the sequel other than a detail Gillan revealed months ago, "I think what I'm really excited about it delving into the sisterly relationship between Gamora and Nebula. I think that we're going to see a little bit more of that, and it's going to be a bit more fleshed out."
Nebula's adopted sister Gamora clearly did not get along in their first cinematic outing, they were both trained (and tortured) by their cosmic supervillain dad Thanos to be killer assassins. However, Gamora landed herself with the Guardians instead of serving her father's evil world-destroying plans.
In fact, Gamora and Nebula tried to kill each other - just a tad dysfunctional.
In a recent video with Groot (Vin Diesel) Gunn commented on their sisterly relationship further in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2:
"The first movie was really about becoming a family. This movie is about being a family. And what's harder, becoming a family or being a family? I think it's being a family. That's where you really have to deal with each other. And that's what this movie is about. And their sisters. They are family, whether they like it or not. And they also want to kill each other, so it adds a new twist to being a sister."0comments
This doesn't change the fact that Nebula is one of the strongest females in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If she were to get a solo movie, there's no doubt that she would shine. Based on what Gunn has already said about her bigger role in the sequel, he may be setting Nebula up for her very own film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
