Logan Director Says It Is An Adult Movie Bringing An End To Jackman's Wolverine

Earlier this month, after 20th Century Fox screened the first 40-minutes of Logan, nobody in attendance was left doubting the film's R-rating. It's gritty, intense, hyper-violent, and contains mature language.

So may not like that Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine movie is geared to adults, but they need to remember that the audience that watched him make his debut in Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000) are all grown-up; they aren't as easily satisified with popcorn spectacles.

"Logan is an attempt to kind of bring an end to Hugh's kind of amazing performance as Wolverine, and the ambition of doing that is to try to make an adult film about Wolverine — to make a movie for grown-ups," Director James Mangold told Flicks and the City. "We're not trying to make a four box something for everyone. We're trying to make a movie that stands out and is a little different because it's a grown-up movie. A grown-up movie that also features intense action."

This Mangold's third collaboration with Jackman, and in that time, he's amazed that the 48-year-old Australian actor never phones in his Wolverine performance — though he could since this is the ninth time he's played the adamantium-clawed mutant — and isn't motivated by a paycheck. "He's always looking how to go deeper, now to go further, how to reveal new aspects of the character," Mangold shared.

The film stars Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Logan/Wolverine and Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Charles Xavier/Professor X. The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl), Richard E. Grant (Game of Thrones), Stephen Merchant (Movie 43), Eriq La Salle (ER), Elise Neal (Scream 2), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black), and Dafne Keen (The Refugees).

The film is being directed by James Mangold (The Wolverine), based on a script by Michael Green (American Gods) and David James Kelly (Mind Mgmt).

Logan opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
