While Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Homecoming enters theaters soon, Sony is attempting to establish their own Spider-verse of solo films. One of the most eagerly anticipated of those is Venom, which will be helmed by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer.

The film is set to star Tom Hardy as the symbiote-bound Eddie Brock, but it still needs to cast its reported villain, Carnage. And now, one Gotham actor has unofficially thrown his name in the running.
Cameron Monaghan, who plays Joker-like standout Jerome Valeska on Fox’s DC Comics prequel series, recently took to Twitter to voice his excitement towards the possibility of getting the role. After one fan suggested that Monaghan play Cletus Kassady in Sony’s big-screen adaptation, the actor revealed that he has loved the character since he was a child.

A #CameronForCarnage hashtag resulted, with fans campaigning for the actor to nab the role. And considering a couple of the different factors at play, he’s a pretty good candidate for the role.
With Monaghan’s appearances on Gotham being fairly sporadic, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility for him to appear in the Marvel Comics-inspired film. TV actors don’t seem to be held to the same level of brand allegiance as film actors, with Marvel Television standout Vincent D’Onofrio recently voicing his interest in appearing in a DC Extended Universe film.
The initial concept and design of Carnage were even reportedly inspired by the Joker, making Monaghan pretty qualified considering his past filmography.
The biggest argument against Monaghan’s casting would have to be the age difference between the 23-year-old Monaghan and his onscreen foe, 39-year-old Hardy. But if there’s enough support for Monaghan’s portrayal, and Sony decides to go in that direction with their casting, it just might happen.
