Our Top Horror Picks on HBO Max in October 2025

HBO Max’s horror lineup is stellar, so deciding which movies should be at the top of your Halloween horror movie marathon list can be difficult, but we have you covered.

If there’s absolutely a single horror movie you should watch in October on HBO Max, it’s The Substance. The movie, about a fading celebrity who uses a mysterious, black-market serum with the promise of a more youthful appearance to horrifying consequences, uses body horror to explore themes of beauty, age, and patriarchy in Hollywood and features a career-best performance for Demi Moore. The Substance made numerous “best horror movies of 2024” lists and is an absolutely brutal and powerful watch.

Those looking for something more along the lines of a slasher should check out Pearl: The X-Traordinary Origin Story, the second installment in Ti West’s X franchise, once again starring Mia Goth as the hauntingly complex titular character. Other great streaming options include Michael Dougherty’s anthology horror movie Trick ‘r Treat, which features non-chronological, intertwining stories all set on Halloween night in a single town; favorites like Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and Edward Scissorhands; and Drag Me to Hell, a criminally underrated horror film with one of the best endings.
