Now that the next film is set to debut in Fridays, fans are already looking forward to the future and the actor's promise for ninth and tenth installments. But while the latest film is meant to kick off a storyline that would extend into the possible final movie in the franchise, plans for the next one aren't yet in place.
"While we're doing one of the films, we'll start talking and daydreaming about other ideas and it'll be a loose thing then," Morgan said. "But as soon as the studio plants a flag and officially decides 'we're going to do the next one,' that's really when we get serious about a treatment or an outline or a scriptment or something like that."
Morgan added that there's no specific plan yet in place because he and Diesel are "still sort of talking about it."
"Vin and I have talked about this one for a while, because the intent is to do 8, 9, and 10 and to make it a trilogy," Morgan said. "So how do they all connect, what are we moving toward, what's that final end point? We've been playing around with that stuff, and the studio has announced dates on it, but in terms of the script actually being written right now, we're not at that stage yet."
It's kind of interesting that they're planning the films as a trilogy without any real idea of what the endgame would be at this point. Most series have some form of skeleton in place to add meat to.
But part of the franchises appeal is its seemingly nonsensical accession to greater heights. Like Morgan and the filmmakers have to challenge themselves with each installment to top the last, which would be diffused if a trilogy were envisioned wholly before hand.
When asked if Morgan could give any hints regarding the future of the series, he had to keep the cards close to his vest.
"Not really, other than just the things we set up in 8, we're going to pay off in the trilogy," Morgan said. "But other than that, it's all kind of under wraps, unfortunately."
The Fate Of The Furious releases in theaters this Friday, April 14.
