James Gunn Reveals One Thing Superman: Legacy Probably Won't Include
The ball is currently rolling on Superman: Legacy, a new film written and directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. Last week, the Internet was shaken with the news that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been cast as Legacy's version of Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane, and there's a lot of hype surrounding their future performances. In a recent comment on Bluesky Social, Gunn teased one element that might not necessarily be part of Legacy's narrative — Superman's origin story. A fan asked Gunn to homage the opening of All-Star Superman (which he has cited as an inspiration for the film) in Legacy, a sequence that shows Krypton's explosion and baby Kal-El's pod landing in Kansas. While Gunn didn't outright confirm that the sequence won't be shown in Legacy, he did argue that "I think we've seen his origin enough in film at this time!"
Given how ubiquitous Superman's origin is in the realm of popular culture, this detail about Legacy isn't necessarily surprising. After all, Gunn's DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran did already tell reporters in January that the movie would not be an origin story, instead following Corenswet's Superman a few years into his superhero career.
What Is Superman: Legacy About?
Per DC Studios, Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
"We got James Gunn and Peter (Safran) working very hard on DC, which is going to be a very big growth driver for this company," Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav explained earlier this year. "We are very bullish on DC. The Superman script first draft is done. Gunn is on a mission from god. It is a really good moment to prove out on DC what we got and how strong it is globally for long-term sustainable growth."
What Is on the DC Universe Slate?
As Gunn and Safran revealed earlier this year, the initial DC Studios slate for "Gods and Monsters" will include movies for Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.
