Netflix Debuts Super Bowl Trailer for Brad Pitt-Starring Cliff Booth Sequel

Though many of the Super Bowl trailers were released ahead of the big game, or at the very least reports circulated about which ones we would get and which ones we wouldn’t, Netflix just made sure to surprise film fans with one no one saw coming. Amid the first quarter of the game, Netflix released the first footage for the upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel movie, starring Brad Pitt as his Oscar-winning character, Cliff Booth.

The rumor mill has pointed toward the film being called “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” but the first trailer for the film stopped short of actually confirming that. The new film arrives from a script by Quentin Tarantino, but the filmmaker isn’t behind the camera for the new project. Instead, one of Pitt’s recurring collaborators, David Fincher, directed the new movie. It’s worth noting that Netflix also teased that the film is “Coming Soon,” but fell short of an actual release date. Though the chances are slim, will they release it right after the Big Game like they did with The Cloverfield Paradox back in 2018? Unlikely, but you never know.

Netflix’s Super Bowl Trailer Reveals First Footage From Adventures of Cliff Booth

The footage from The Adventures of Cliff Booth makes one thing very clear immediately: this is moving on from the 1960s setting of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and is giving us the grimy, grainy Hollywood of the 1970s instead. Not only does Pitt’s character have an all-new haircut and facial hair situation, but the club scene is immediately noticeable as being from a different era. That new era means new faces too, as Pitt’s co-star from “Hollywood,” Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton, is not expected to appear in the film (though a surprise cameo would be welcome). Instead, the film will also star Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Holt McCallany, Corey Fogelmanis, and JB Tadena.

One of the funniest elements of the first teaser for The Adventures of Cliff Booth is that the trailer doesn’t shy away from the very R-Rated nature of the film itself. Rather than cutting around the adult material in the film, the trailer playfully censors these elements with little scratches on the image that evoke 35mm film scratches, including curse words, joints, and nudity. Another funny details is an Academy Award is prominently featured in one shot, seemingly being handled by Booth, in what is almost certainly a little meta joke to the fact that he won an Oscar for his role in the film.

Very little is revealed in the Cliff Booth trailer reveals much about the plot of the film, but it’s worth noting that we don’t appear to actually see Booth working on a film set. Intead, he appears to be using his talents at a demolition derby. That said, he’s still very much finding his path has crossed with some unsavory types, including what seems like another violent home invasion. No word on if the film will have an alternate history take on a major murder again or not, like how Once Upon a Time in Hollywood skewered the Manson family.

In any event, the first reveal of this footage and the tease that The Adventures of Cliff Booth is “coming soon” should at least have fans anticipating its eventual release on Netflix, which hopefully won’t be too far away now.
