Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is bringing some of its most iconic characters back into the fold, after many of the main series cast was absent from the franchise’s first installment. We’ve already seen the return of both Will and Elizabeth Turner, but a closer listen to many of the trailers may reveal another popular character is returning to the Pirates films.

At the start of a few of the teasers, a voice is heard over the footage. As the zombie-esque pirates start to flood the screen the woman talking sounds awfully familiar. The line that states, “The dead have taken command of the sea” is spoken with an accent that many Pirates fans should immediately recognize.

It sounds like Calypso.

If you recall, Calypso was a major part for the second and third films. She was the former lover of Davy Jones, and his broken promises caused her to retain a human form, keeping her from being one with the sea as she truly belonged. At the end of the third movie, she returned to her original state, becoming the sea itself.

If something is going on in the deadly waters of the Caribbean, Calypso will know about it. So, it stands to reason, that she could be involved in the events of Dead Men Tell No Tales. The addition of Will Turner also furthers speculation surrounding her involvement, as she has a strong working relationship with whomever is the current captain of the Flying Dutchman.

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazer (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea โ€“ notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has never faced.
