Horror Wins the Labor Day Weekend Box Office as Weapons Returns to #1

The horror movie Weapons continues to dominate the box office, taking enough to claim the top spot at the box office for a second week. The movie is one of the biggest releases this year, having already surpassed its budget within the span of two weeks. As of now, it currently has a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Popcornmeter rating of 85% from audiences. The film has beaten out newcomers Caught Stealing, The Roses, and The Toxic Avenger at the box office; it has also beaten out the re-release of Jaws, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary.

According to Deadline, Weapons secured another $12.4 million at the domestic box office. As it stands, the horror is currently sitting at an impressive domestic haul of $124.8 million and $94.2 million internationally. Collectively, the movie has brought in around $219 million worldwide. That’s an impressive feat for a movie that was produced for just $38 million. It’s currently director Zach Cregger’s biggest release, having surpassed Barbarian‘s worldwide haul of $45.3 million. The director is set to follow-up Weapons with Sony’s Resident Evil reboot, which is reportedly in pre-production overseas. Following Resident Evil, Cregger is exploring a Weapons prequel movie that’ll focus on the breakout character from Weapons, Aunt Gladys. He also penned a screenplay set within the world of the DC Universe titled Henchman, but that has not officially been ordered by DC Studios or Warner Bros.

Coming in second place at the Labor Day weekend box office is none other than Jaws. The re-release of the beloved movie took a huge bite at the box office with an estimated $9.8 million over the course of the four-day weekend. However, it’s thought the film could exceed expectations and surpass $10 million by the time the weekend is over. In third place is Sony’s newest release, Caught Stealing, with an estimated $9.5 million. The Darren Aronofsky film currently has a Fresh rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and features an impressive cast including Austin Butler, Matt Smith, and Zoรซ Kravitz. In fourth place is fellow new release, The Roses, with an estimated $8 million haul. Coming in fifth place is the Cineverse film, The Toxic Avenger, which is eyeing $2.2 million.

With little to no competition in the next week or two, Weapons is likely to have a threepeat. Working in Weapons‘ favor, of course, is the film’s excellent word of mouth. The horror movie, which is yet another original idea by Cregger, has been hailed as “an expertly crafted yarn of terrifying mystery and thrilling intrigue.” Like with Barbarian, Cregger manages to deliver a truly horrifying movie that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. The film was supposed to have a chapter that told the origin of Aunt Gladys, but it’s thought the writer-director will instead use that cut chapter to build upon for the proposed Aunt Gladys prequel movie.

Weapons features an all-star cast of Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, including Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, and Alden Ehrenreich. Joining them in the critically acclaimed horror movie are Cary Christopher, Amy Madigan, June Diane Raphael, Austin Abrams, and Jason Turner. Weapons is now playing exclusively in movie theaters everywhere. Fans can currently pre-order Weapons on DVD and Blu-Ray, although an official home release date has not yet been revealed.
