Is The New Star Wars Saga Trying To Tell Us Something With Its Movie Titles?

Now that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has entered the back half of its theatrical run, it’s time to look forward to the next big entry in the main Star Wars narrative, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.

While it doesn’t shed any light on the actual meaning of the title, you might not have noticed that the two titles together illustrate the transition of themes. The sentence together reads “The Force Awakens The Last Jedi”, which fits in with the films main arc of Rey discovering her potential in the force and seeking out Luke Skywalker, who many believe to be the last Jedi.

Speaking of Luke, actor Mark Hamil recently shared his thoughts on the title, and how it also mirrors the script for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. “the actual phrase is in the crawl for Episode VII. By the way, when you read The Force Awakens script, the very first [few] words are, ‘Luke Skywalker has vanished.’ Ooh, baby, this is going to be good! I’m going to have a great part! But down later in the crawl, and I can’t quote it exactly, I saw on Twitter this morning, ‘until Skywalker, the last Jedi, is destroyed.’”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
