Invincible Season 4 Shares First Look at Original Storyline Not From The Comics

Mark Grayson has gone through some tough times in the history of Invinicible’s animated series, with the fourth season set to arrive on Amazon Prime Video on March 18th. In a major twist, the next season is planning to throw a big curveball at the titular hero in the form of a storyline that never made its way into the comics. Damien Darkblood, who was given a larger role in the animated show, is set to fight through the bowels of hell, and Mark looks to be a part of the ride in this brand new preview.

Invincible has shared several new images from the upcoming fourth season, which won’t just focus on Damien Darkblood but also on various new heroes and villains taking center stage. On top of Clancy Brown returning to this role, actors Matthew Rhys, Lee Pace, and Danai Gurira will take on the roles of the villains Dinosaurus, Thragg, and Universa, respectively. Most of the original cast will be returning to their roles as well, though voice actor Aaron Paul has stated that he won’t be returning to the role of Powerplex. You can check out the preview images below that highlight new and old heroes and villains alike.

As a refresher to this original storyline, Damien was sent to the underworld by none other than Cecil, who was attempting to hide Omni-Man’s true intentions. Darkblood was attempting to spill the beans, which could have sent Nolan into a destructive spiral that could have caused massive destruction. While Omni-Man eventually raged in an attempt to get Mark on his side, Damien was still trapped in hell. In the season three post-credits scene, Damien was seen talking with Satan himself, hyping up a war that was apparently set to bring Mark into the fray.

Last year, Invincible creator Robert Kirkman discussed the original storyline and how it was meant to originally be a part of the Image Comic, “In the comics, he was never sent to hell. He was a great character that we loved from the first season. Clancy Brown’s portrayal of him was spot-on and so terrific. We always wanted to figure out a way to get Damian Darkblood back into the show, and then — gosh, do I want to spoil this? There’s a storyline from the comic that I never got around to doing. Every superhero story has some chapter where they go to hell, and they fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comics. It’s a big deal. I never got around to doing anything like that in “Invincible.” I kept getting sidetracked, and there was never a good time. So it’s entirely possible that we may be doing something like that in the show, and that scene at the end of that episode is setting that up.”

Kirkman also noted that this new story would take place in Invincible’s fourth episode of season four, meaning we won’t be waiting long to see Damien and Mark come face-to-face. While the supernatural crime fighter has been shown as a detective throughout the series, it seems that he will be donning hellish armor this time around.
