Betty Is Central to Season 2's Darkest Story 'Riverdale' Showrunner Says

Last season on Riverdale, Betty Cooper told the whole town at the jubilee about how they need to do better. In the show's upcoming second season Betty may find herself regretting those words.

With the new season of The CW drama shaping up to be a dark and scary mystery thriller, star Lili Reinhart told Entertainment Weekly that Betty will find herself right in the middle of the story and the darkness because of that speech.

"The entire mystery of season two is completely under wraps and we haven't been able to talk about it all," Reinhart said. "What we can say is that Betty's speech in the finale at the jubilee about how the town needs to do better has repercussions."

We already know that those repercussions will send Betty heading back into Dark Betty territory and thanks to the most recent Riverdale trailer we know that no character is spared the darkness, but showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa explained that the darkness Betty finds herself in is like nothing the character -- or her friends -- has seen before and it the trip into darkness happens fast.

"I would say by episode four and five, Betty is absolutely in the heart of darkness," Aguirre-Sacasa said. "We're putting her through the fires like never before. I can't say too much because there's a couple of big twists, but Betty is absolutely at the heart of the darkest story we're telling this season."

Riverdale returns on Wednesday, October 11th on The CW.
