Ten years after it first began with Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and six years after it ended, The Promised Neverland has made a surprise return with a brand new sequel entry. It’s big a milestone year for Shonen Jump as while there are a number of long running franchises coming to their respective ends, there are also many more that have begun celebrating huge milestones. That’s especially the case for The Promised Neverland, which is unfortunately had a rough go at things for the past few years thanks to its divisive anime adaptation.

Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu’s The Promised Neverland has kicked off the tenth anniversary celebration of the manga’s original debut with Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and that celebration has kicked off with an official return of the series to the magazine itself. With the creators bringing the series back for a special new chapter set long after the events of the original series, this new sequel chapter helps to close one of the emotional loops left open years prior.

The Promsied Neverland is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the release of a “special bonus chapter” titled “Undying Blade.” This is set in the year 2050, long after the end of the original series. Focusing on Ayshe, it finally resolves some of the lingering feelings that have been left behind by that original ending. Because while Emma was able to strike a new deal that would save humanity heading into the future, others like Ayshe still were left to carry the emotions of everything that happened to get to that grand finale point.

In the original series, Norman and the others had killed Ayshe’s father and that never really got resolved when all the fighting was done. This extra chapter reveals that she’s still struggling with the fact that she feels hatred over Norman and the others for killing her father despite the fact that she’s bonded with the other humans since. It’s something that she’s nearly violent over, but speaking with Emma she discovers that hope that she had been lacking this entire time.

What Does This Mean for The Promised Neverland’s Future?

This is only the first of many celebrations planned for The Promised Neverland’s tenth anniversary, and fans will see more art and other smaller releases from the original creators behind it all to help commemorate its legacy. This is likely going to be the biggest of the projects, however, as it’s hard to top an official sequel story that picks up from the events of the original. But hopefully this sequel helps to salve some of the heat that has been brewing since the series came to its end. It’s still controversial to this day.

The Promised Neverland didn’t have a traditional end to its main conflict as revealed through this sequel chapter as Emma lost her memories of everything that happened as the result of a final deal. And things got even more divisive when the anime adaptation decided to butcher nearly 65% of the manga’s story in favor of speeding to its own grand finale in just two single seasons. But then again, we still talk about after all these years so that has to mean something.
