One-Punch Man is finally returning to the small screen on October 5th next month, marking the first time we’ll see Saitama punch an opponent in over five years. Earlier this week, J.C. Staff released the first new trailer in almost a year to confirm that the series was still set on releasing during this fall anime season. However, not all is well within the anime fan community, as fans are getting more nervous about the upcoming third season. Many Saitama enthusiasts are crossing their fingers that the “hero for fun’s” return will live up to his past battles, but others are already pessimistic thanks to one major fact.

J.C. Staff had some big shoes to fill following Studio Madhouse’s first season of One-Punch Man, and for many anime enthusiasts, they felt as though the current production didn’t live up to the one that started it all. Unfortunately, the latest trailer for season three has fans worried about the state of the animation for the hero’s comeback. While the trailer itself was only fifteen seconds long, the animation therein wasn’t blowing viewers away, and said fans were more than willing to take to social media to share their thoughts. You can check out fan commentary on Saitama’s return below.
Season 3’s Director Speaks

The recent trailer wasn’t the only reason for the drama surrounding One-Punch Man’s third season. The director of the upcoming episodes, Shimpei Nagai released a statement immediately following the trailer’s release, “I’m Shimpei Nagai, the director of One Punch Man Season 3. I completely understand everyone’s reactions. Please calm down and hear me out, if you would. I’ll explain why I was chosen, and it might be a bit long, but please listen. I’ve been a freelancer from the beginning, and that hasn’t changed.”
The anime director continued, “At 37, I wrapped up my apprenticeship and stepped into the anime world with a work called ‘Hiiro no Kakera.’ I learned how to create hybrid animation with 3D in a project called ‘Aquarion Logos,’ and after that, I switched to a 3D company for just one year, contributing to image boards for ‘Altered Carbon’ and such. My goal was always Manglobe. I honed my skills on Episode 6 of ‘GANGSTA’ and ‘Samurai Flamenco’ among others. I was aiming for a hybrid of 3DCG and hand-drawn animation, but as everyone knows, Manglobe ended up closing down.”
When last we left One-Punch Man in its second season, Saitama was still fighting against the Monster Association, while Garou had signed up with the subterranean creatures. Still hoping to kill all the heroes he could find, the “Hero Filler” went through some major cosmetic changes, looking far more like a monster himself than before. As manga readers know, a confrontation is coming between the main anime’s hero and villain and it will be one for the record books.
