7 Reasons Storm Is the Best X-Man

The X-Men have had one of the most storied histories in comics. While the team has been through some of the most harrowing events in Marvel history, that only part of what makes the team so interesting. What really defined the X-Men are the characters. The X-Men have counted some of the coolest heroes of all time on their roster, each of them earning their place with the team in different ways and for different reasons. That said, not every member of the X-Men is created equally. Some members are obviously more important than others. There are some heroes who aren’t just defined by being an X-Man, but they define the X-Men. These are the best members of the team and there’s one member who obviously stands above the rest โ€” Storm.

Storm joined the team in Giant-Size X-Men #1 and has grown into one of the most important members of the group. Storm led the X-Men for years, winning the position from Cyclops when she didn’t even have powers. Storm has grown and changed over the years in a variety of ways, every single change making her a better character and hero. It’s pretty easy to make the argument that Storm is the best X-Man, these seven reasons proving her superiority.

7) Everyone Respects Her

Storm is one of the most respected heroes in the Marvel Universe. She proved herself worthy of an Asgardian hammer when the Loki and the X-Men tangled, gaining the respect of Thor. This would be the first, but not the last, hero outside of the X-Men that Storm would impress. Storm is one of three heroes who has been a member of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers. She was married to the Black Panther for a time and is a current member of the Avengers. Storm has fought alongside the greatest heroes that the Earth has ever seen and all of them know that Storm is a force to be reckoned with. Storm’s reputation precedes her everywhere she goes. She’s respected on a level that most other X-Men aren’t. The X-Men, as a whole, don’t always have the best relationship with heroes outside of the team. However, everyone knows Storm, everyone respects Storm, and everyone fears Storm. The X-Men need more members like her, someone who other heroes know and respect, who can work with pretty much anyone. Storm’s fame has grown beyond the X-Men, and it makes her exactly the kind of hero that the team needs on their side.

6) Storm Has the Best Costumes

There are very few superheroes out there who have as many great costumes as Storm. Storm’s first costume was an all-time great costume, but the thing about Storm’s costume closet is that nearly every single Storm costume is an all-time great costume. Look at something like her punk rock look or the silver ’90s suit, or basically any of her costumes in the 21st century. Storm is a hero whose costume game never misses, and she served some of the best looks in X-Men history again and again. The X-Men are a team with some amazing costumes (which is what happens when the best artists in comics work on the books); members of the team have a certain reputation to uphold when it comes to costumes. Storm is up there with Cyclops and Wolverine when it comes to good costumes, and that’s a great place to be. Storm’s costume game is always on point, whether she’s leading the X-Men, winning knife fights with Morlocks, or running through Tokyo with Yukio.

5) Storm Has Deep Bonds to the X-Men

Storm joined the X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1, recruited from Africa by Professor X. She made friends almost immediately, and the X-Men became something that she hadn’t before, a family. Storm lost her parents at an early age and was forced out onto the streets. While she did have her fellow thieves, and then the tribes of the plains worshiping her, she never had anyone she was close to, anyone she could call an equal. The X-Men changed all of that. Colossus and Nightcrawler became her younger brothers, Cyclops her older brother, Jean her sister, Wolverine her best friend. Kitty Pryde and Rogue would also take up significant places in her heart, and she would be the first X-Man to care for Gambit. Storm found herself in the middle of a web of love, one that drew in more and more people as the years went by. Becoming an X-Man allowed Storm to see a side of life that she didn’t often get exposed to, and this allowed her to grow as a person. Storm is a true believer in the X-Men’s mission, and her bonds with the team go much deeper than many. The X-Men gave Storm everything and while she’s left the team at times, her true home is where ever the X-Men are.

4) Storm Is Ridiculously Skilled

When most people think of Storm, they think of the all-powerful weather goddess, floating above the battlefield and throwing lightning bolts. However, there’s so much more to Storm than just that. Storm became a pickpocket on the streets of Cairo, which means that she had to master multiple skills, from stealing to knife fighting, to stay alive. Storm can pick locks and take your wallet without you realizing it. She can fight without her powers as well as she can without them. There have been several times when Storm went head to head with formidable fighters without her powers and won; two that automatically spring to mind are her battle against Callisto to see who would become the leader of the Morlocks, which saw Storm beat Callisto in a knife fight, stabbing her in the chest, and the time she fought Cyclops for leadership of the X-Men without her powers. Storm was able to show everyone that as great as her powers were, she didn’t need them. Storm was queen of one of the most powerful countries on the face of the Earth for several years, showing that she was more than just a combat leader, but someone who could move through the halls of power effortlessly. Storm brings way more than her powers to every fight, and this makes her the perfect X-Man.

3) Storm’s Regal Bearing

Storm is called a “goddess”, and that’s honestly the best way to describe her. Storm is a person who you see and you just want to worship. She is easily one of the most beautiful women in the superhero community, so whenever she enters the room every eye is drawn to her. However, it’s more than that; there’s just something about Storm that commands attention. There’s a reason that Doctor Doom has been obsessed with her since they met; there’s a reason that the King of Wakanda looked at her and felt she was the perfect queen. She was worshiped not just for her powers, but for the wisdom that she had earned living a life of privation after the death of her parents. Storm comes from a long line of powerful women, and that sense of ancient power lies within her. One of the things I’ve always liked to say about the marriage of Storm and Black Panther is that even a king isn’t worthy of a goddess, which really says it all about the way Storm is perceived among X-Men fans. She’s a flawless divinity, her power matched only by her regal bearing. There’s a reason that Eternity, the embodiment of the universe itself, chose Storm as the host for its power. Only someone like Storm could hold the power of the universe.

2) Storm Is a Perfect Leader

Storm’s time with the X-Men saw her learning a lot about being a team player, and eventually she decided that she should lead the team instead of Cyclops, who hadn’t been the same since the end of “The Dark Phoenix Saga”. So, Storm challenged him and was able to defeat him completely without her powers (I know this is the third time I’ve talked about this, but it really is an extremely impressive feat). Storm became the leader of the team, and led them through some of the most contentious times in X-Men history. She led them against the Adversary, kept the group together throughout the Outback Era, leading them to victories against Genosha, the Reavers, the Warskrull, Mystique’s Brotherhood, Madelyne Pryor and the demons of Limbo, and the Shadow King. She was given leadership of the Gold Team, and led them in battle with everything out there. She took over when Cyclops left after “Operation: Zero Tolerance” and led the X-Treme X-Men, as well as the X.S.E. team. Storm has led the X-Men through thick and thin, and more than proven her place as one of the team’s best leaders. A lot of people think Cyclops is better, but here’s the thing โ€” when Cyclops leads the team, the group usually has all of the money and materiel they need; while mutants may not be in the best place, Cyclops has the resources. Storm has led the team through times when the only resources they had were what they could beg, borrow, or steal. She’s an amazing leader, able to lead the X-Men in circumstances where the odds are completely stacked against them.

1) Storm Has the Powers of a Goddess

Storm is an Omega-class mutant with power over weather. This was always an amazing power and it’s only gotten more formidable as Storm has mastered her abilities. Storm can summon lightning, wind, rain, and snow, and make them do whatever she wants. She can unleash tornadoes and hurricanes of impossible power at her enemies. She can flood entire cities if she so chooses, and end the grasp of droughts with a thought. Storm’s powers are such that she is considered a storm god by beings like Thor, and she stands among Marvel’s most overpowered characters. Storm’s powers are based on electromagnetism, and she’s learned to manipulate fields of electromagnetic force at levels approaching Magneto’s own power. She also has magical proclivity in her blood, and is partly divine. Storm can pretty much wreck any enemy in front of her, and that’s before we get to the times when she’s held an Asgardian hammer or had the power of Eternity in her back pocket. The X-Men face off against enemies with unfathomable power, and they need members who can match that. Storm is exactly that kind of X-Man, her godly powers making her into one of the dangerous mutants on the face of the Earth.
