One of the biggest stories around gaming in the latter half of 2026 surrounds Physint, the Kojima Productions game originally being created in association with Sony and PlayStation. This spiritual successor to the Metal Gear Solid series was meant to be a strong, new stealth-action IP led by the legendary Hideo Kojima, but it was unceremoniously cancelled back in June 2026 internally. Now, with the game having been kept alive through a new partnership with Xbox, new details have emerged surrounding the title’s journey, including how impactful it may have been if it had disappeared entirely.

The first reports about Physint‘s cancellation marked Sony’s lack of confidence in Kojima, with some speculating that poor sales numbers for the Death Stranding games played a key factor in PlayStation pulling the plug on the project. According to new details from interviews Kojima has conducted since the news broke, Physint had its funding suddenly removed back in June with almost no warning. Although Kojima had immediate concerns for those working at his company on both Physint and his other project OD, there were also worries about how such a cancellation would reflect on indie games as a whole.
New Details Surrounding Physint Reveal That Kojima Wanted It To Continue For Other Indie Games

Based on Kojima’s own words, “I believe that the trend of this era should be one in which creators can do their own independent projects and become big. But if Kojima Productions collapses, that doesn’t follow this trend at all. It’s a step backwards for indies.” This reflects a why Kojima fought so hard to get Physint back on track, as should it be cancelled, it would be a huge indictment of indie gaming. If even a Hideo Kojima-led video game project couldn’t get made under current industry strains, potential publishers and partners would be even less confident funding creative ideas from across the indie scene.
Given how successful indie games have been over the last few years, Physint being cancelled without any potential future would have been, as Kojima puts it, a massive step back. The huge number of layoffs at both PlayStation and Xbox studios this year have put a massive pressure on other games being worked on, leading to more than a few being cancelled without long-term support. Studios small and large have been closing in greater numbers over the last few years too, including some recognizable names like:
- Bluepoint Games
- Wildlight Entertainment
- Moonloot Games
- Night School Studio
- Vermila Studios
- IO Interactive Instanbul
- Midgar Studio
- Queen Digital Entertainment
- Kwalee Labs
- Multiple Ubisoft Studios
- Spiders Games
- Dark Outlaw Games
- MidSummer Studios
- Atomic Arcade
- Intrepid Studios
- Leikir Studio
These are just a few examples from across gaming, but it only scratches the surface of the struggles the industry is facing. Xbox alone has 3,200 layoffs planned following its big studio restructure, which saw multiple studios have to go independent or get shut down. With Kojima Productions almost being a poster child for indie success, to see even it suffer a failure would have been a huge blow. It might have sent a signal that no one, not even the innovative genius of someone like Hideo Kojima, was immune to being a “business risk” not worth investing in.
PlayStation’s Sudden Cancellation Could Have Caused Others To Lose Faith In Independent Projects Altogether

Had Physint not been picked up by Xbox, the Sony cancellation could have had a ripple effect far beyond what players may imagine. For starters, without financial backing from someone like Sony, Kojima Productions could have shut down altogether, cancelling the horror-driven OD project they were already making in association with Xbox alongside Physint. This would have put 200 employees at the studio out of a job, including extremely talented veterans. That alone would have sent quite the message โ that no matter how creative or innovative you were in gaming, you weren’t safe from industry woes.
The result of that outcome would have been more and more independent studios announcing that they had funding pulled, or failed to secure a publisher of any variety. Without the confidence that an indie game can succeed, there would be fewer and fewer investments into creative groups who could make such a title. Despite the massive passion and critical acclaim for indie games like Hollow Knight Silksong or Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, businesses simply wouldn’t try to take any chances. In many ways, this is already an unsettling trend, but with Physint‘s initial fate, it could have been way worse.
Kojima’s Multi-Media IP Pitch To Xbox For Physint May Have Kept Many Other Indie Titles Alive

This is what makes Kojima’s efforts worth it in the end for Physint, beyond what that game will create individually. There’s no doubt that Physint will be much of what it has been promised to be, acting as a stealth action game with plenty of innovations for fans to try. However, the game’s continued existence (and hopeful future success) can keep other indie games’ funding by showing that indie titles can exist despite adversity.
According to Kojima himself, his new pitch for Physint had to include not just a pitch for a new game, but for an all-encompassing IP across different media platforms. In his words, “I want to consider everything like movies, dramas, anime, TV, comics, music. Let’s create a new IP with all of this included.” While not every indie game can achieve this level of pitch, and it’s a little ridiculous that such a broad concept needed to be painted to get Xbox’s approval, it does show that such big swings can be accepted.
This shows what has kept many indie games going โ that with a proper direction and clear vision, you can still receive support. Although the fate of indie games didn’t completely rely on one Kojima project surviving, it does keep intact the fragile relationship businesses are taking with games right now. An increased focus on “stable” IPs means that new ones are hard to get going, so seeing Physint under Xbox despite Sony’s efforts to cancel it may inspire other games in similar positions to keep fighting to exist as artistic endeavors worth pursuing.
