Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was yet another smash hit in Marvel Studios impressive track record, surprising no one as it took in a ton of box office bucks.
A series of tapes created by Peter’s mom and given to him before her death, the spate of classic tracks allows viewers to connect with the outer space adventures. But one track is featured extensively including in a scene where Star-Lord and his father discuss its meaning and impact in their lives.
“Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass topped the charts in 1972 before returning to relevancy due to its feature in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the song’s creator Elliot Lurie said he enjoyed how it was used in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.
“The first Guardians is not the type of movie that I would normally watch, but I had heard so many great things that I put the DVD in and from the first moment I was hooked,” Lurie said. “I got a request from my music publisher about nine months ago to use 'Brandy' for sequel, and I immediately said we have got to get this into these great movies. And then I started to read scene descriptions sent over to the publisher and I said, 'Wow, this is more than a background tune. This is really in the story.’”
Lurie said that he never had a clear story to the meaning of the song when it originally came out.
“I wrote 'Brandy' the way I usually write, which is I start strumming some chords and once they start coming together, I associated words,” said Lurie. “I had a high school girlfriend named Randye, and I was saying her name over the chords and then I made up the verses and the story. In my mind, it was a nineteenth century port with sailors and barmaids and things like that. So, the name is borrowed from my high school girlfriend and then changed to Brandy because obviously that makes a lot more sense when you are a barmaid.”
Lurie said that he enjoyed the meaning applied to the song in the film when Ego explains it to Peter, even if that meaning wasn’t his.
“And maybe, in retrospect, subconsciously it was a metaphor,” Lurie said. “It is certainly the use that has shined the brightest light on the song since it was originally a hit.”
