The recent release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has captured audience’s hearts, and proved to be a success for Marvel Studios. And now, fans are hoping to make one of the film’s most memorable moments a reality – and Vol. 2’s director is on board.
We recently reported that a Change.org petition has been started to get Michael Rooker – who played the franchise’s scene-stealing Yondu – a cameo in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns.
The sequel, which stars Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda, is currently filming in England, and many are hoping that Rooker will be able to appear in it in some way. This is largely due to a memorable line that Rooker says in Vol. 2, declaring that he’s “Mary Poppins, y’all!” while flying down to the ground with his magical arrow.
Seeing as Marvel is owned by Disney, who is producing the Mary Poppins sequel, it definitely seems like a logical step. And now, that campaign appears to have an endorsement from James Gunn, director of both Guardians films and a close friend of Rooker’s.
Gunn recently shared a piece of fan art on his Facebook page that highlights the film’s Mary Poppins reference. In the comments, a fan suggested that Rooker get a cameo in the film because of that scene, and Gunn agreed.
While Gunn does have his established relationship with Marvel and Disney, there’s no indication if he will actually have any pull with getting Rooker in the upcoming film. Either way, his support for the clever idea is certainly awesome.
