Marvel revealed a teaser image for Iceman #1, with a release date of spring 2017. The shattered image shows fragments of Iceman's history and a logo with a gold "X" (long time X-Men fans may remember that Iceman was a member of the X-Men's Gold Team in the 1990s). No creators were named.
It is also unclear which Iceman the new series will focus on, the veteran Iceman who has been operating as a member of Storm's Extraordinary X-Men team, or the time-displaced Iceman from his days as a member of the original X-Men who has been featured in All-New X-Men.
The younger Iceman came out as gay in the pages of All-New X-Men during the Brian Michael Bendis run, after his teammate, Jean Grey learned the truth by reading his mind. The younger Iceman coming out helped his older self come to terms with being closeted for so many years and finally coming out himself.
Fans, especially fans from the LGBTQ community, have been asking for a series spotlighting Iceman ever since the character's orientation was revealed, pointing out Marvel's lack of LGBTQ lead characters. The new Iceman series is the second recently announced series to fill that void, following the announced Miss America solo series that capped off New York Comic Con.
Iceman has long been portrayed as a character with vast, untapped potential. His powers make Iceman an omega level mutant, but his confidence issues often prevent him from using them to their fullest, and, in the wake of M-Day in House of M, caused him to psychosomatically block off his powers altogether. Perhaps a solo series will allow Iceman to build his confidence up to new heights.
In addition to being a founding member of the X-Men, Iceman has been a part of the original Champions, the Defenders, and was a founding member of X-Factor. He has had two self-titled titled miniseries - one in 1984 written by J.M. DeMatteis, and another in the 2000s by Andy Lanning and Karl Kerschl - but this will be Iceman's first ever solo ongoing title.
We expect more ResurrXion announcements throughout the week, so keep checking ComicBook.com for more information about the X-Men's line relaunch.
