Tom Holland will be the third actor to claim the role of Spider-Man for a new movie franchise. Tobey Maguire brought an awkward geekiness reminiscent of Spider-Man's oldest stories to his three appearances as the Marvel hero in Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3. When Sony decided to reboot the franchise, Andrew Garfield took over as a slicker, cooler Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Holland debuted as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and will make his first headlining appearance as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming. That makes two appearances. How many does the new Spidey have left in the contract he signed with Sony and Marvel Studios?
"They give you options, and those could be exercised whenever. Like a cameo in Avengers," Holland tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I'm unclear as to which movies, though. I do know I have three Spider-Man movies and three solo movies contracted. But if you have another movie, Marvel is so good at working around it. They're very respectful of your life, really. They understand that you have to work on other movies, and they try and fix it up so you can work around each other."
Holland's choice of words here is a little confusing. Most fans would consider his Spider-Man movies to be the same as his solo movies. While the wording is awkward, it seems like he is trying to say that he will appear in three Spider-Man movies as well as three other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Assuming that Captain America: Civil War counts as one guest appearance, that leaves two more Marvel Cinematic Universe movies for Holland to appear as Spider-Man in. Avengers: Infinity War seems like a likely next stop, and could lead to a return in Avengers 4.
Marvel is known for locking talent down with extensive contracts, usually ranging from 6-9 appearances. Many of the actors who debuted as their characters in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe won't reach the end of their contract until Phase Three concludes.
