Out of the myriad of intriguing fan castings for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, there is one actor who pretty much gets his own category at this point. That would be Reacher star Alan Ritchson, who many fans have suggested as the perfect candidate to play the new DCU’s version of Batman. Based on comments from Gunn and Ritchson, that likely isn’t happening, but what seems to be very much happening is Ritchson playing a different DC character down the line. That said, Ritchson just revealed the one DC character he’s glad to let pass on by.

During an interview with Liamlovesmovies, Ritchson was asked if he would be open to returning as Aquaman, the DC hero he played on The CW’s Smallville series years ago. Ritchson said, “No, no, I’d never take that from Momoa, I have too much respect. I love Jason Momoa.”
It was then brought up that Momoa is playing Lobo now, and while that’s true, Ritchson teased some new possibilities for a potential role in the DC Universe. “No, I think there, I would definitely wanna explore some new horizons, and I think uh, I have a feeling we may. We’ll see,” Ritchson said.
Alan Ritchson Played Aquaman on Smallville
Ritchson is quite familiar with the DC Universe already, as not only did he play Hawk in Titans, but before that, he played Aquaman in Smallville. Ritchson first showed up in Smallville Season 5 after saving Lois Lane from drowning. This set him on a collision course with Clark Kent, but they would ultimately team up to take on Lex Luthor and shut down his Leviathan project.
Ritchson would reprise the role several more times over the course of the series, including in Season 6, where it was revealed he had joined up with Green Arrow’s team of superheroes alongside Bart Allen (Flash) and Victor Stone (Cyborg). Aquaman would return once again in season 8, still working with Oliver’s team alongside Dinah Lance as well.
Ritchson’s final appearance in the series was in season 10, and this featured some of the biggest moments for the character. Not only was it revealed that he had married Mera, but he would also come face-to-face with Slade Wilson.
Aquaman’s Status in Gunn’s New DC Universe
Right now, there isn’t much known about the plans for Aquaman in Gunn’s new DC Universe, but what is known is that it won’t feature Momoa. That’s because Momoa is now playing the character of Lobo, and will make his DC Studios debut in the upcoming Supergirl. With Ritchson’s comments regarding the character, he seems to be looking at other possibilities, so it would seem the character’s spot will remain vacant for now.
It could be a minute before we see Aquaman make his return to the big screen, as there are any number of other characters that seem to be higher on the priority list. The current slate of projects includes Clayface, Lanterns, Supergirl, and Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, which was the most recent announcement. Gunn has also alluded to Batman and Wonder Woman being moved into higher priority positions, so with all that cooking at the moment, it might be a while before there’s a spot for Aquaman.
