Avengers: Doomsday Rumor Means Answering the MCU’s Biggest Endgame Question

One big rumor about Avengers: Doomsday would mean the MCU having to revisit the events of Avengers: Endgame, and it would be a risk. As with any major Marvel movie, there are already countless rumors and theories about Doomsday swirling around. These range from broad speculation regarding characters who’ll secretly be in it (just about everyone to have ever been in a Marvel movie, apparently), to more specific and detailed ideas, such as Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom being a Tony Stark variant. With well over a year to go before the fifth Avengers movie releases, it’ll only ramp up in the coming months as we learn more about the film’s plot.

One character who is at the center of a lot of this is Captain America – the Steve Rogers version, not Sam Wilson. There’s long been talk that Chris Evans would return to his iconic role, which only intensified when it was announced Downey Jr. was coming back. More recently, we’ve seen Evans’ “Avengers physique” spark discussion, and one rumor has suggested that Doom will be targeting Steve himself, because of what happened in Endgame. The idea goes that Steve going back in time to be with Peggy caused an incursion that killed Doom’s family, and now he’s out for revenge. If Cap has to come back, it’s not the worst idea (though it needs to be taken with a shaker full of salt), but it would have clear implications on Endgame.

Steve Rogers’ Return Would Have To Explain Old Captain America In Endgame’s Ending

Old Captain America in Avengers: Endgame

Endgame gave Steve the happy ending he’d wanted and deserved with Peggy Carter, but a couple of things were never cleared up. That was fine at the time, as what mattered more was the emotional resonance and meaning of his story’s conclusion, but if he returns, those questions will need to be revisited. And chief among them is just how the old Captain America got back to give Sam his shield. He didn’t return to the platform, so just how did he get back?

With this comes another question, and it’s one that even divided Endgame‘s writers and directors: did Cap’s staying in the past create a branched timeline, which would then mean he had to cross back over into the main MCU timeline, or was he there all along? The Russos said it was the former, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely the latter. If Steve is back, and more specifically, Doom is targeting him and Peggy, then those are questions it’ll likely have to answer. It would need a clear explanation of what happened, and would certainly have to clarify whether Steve had crossed timelines (and ideally, how he did it, though it could hand-wave that away).

That would be something that requires a bit of Thanos’ obsession: balance. The movie will inevitably have a lot going on, and so it can’t get too bogged down in exposition dumps. At the same time, if it’s going to the effort of revisiting the MCU’s biggest movie and potentially undoing its happiest ending, then it owes the audience some greater explanation. The MCU’s rules and definitions around timelines, incursions, and everything else multiverse-related are all pretty fast-and-loose and can change depending on the release, but it needs something that works with what we see in Endgame.

Is Chris Evans’ Captain America Returning In Avengers: Doomsday A Good Idea?

Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter in Avengers: Endgame

It’s easy to see why Marvel would want to bring Evans back – something that, regardless of how it goes down, seems certain to happen. It would mean Doomsday has the MCU’s two biggest stars back, something that could elevate it to the level of hype not seen since, well, Endgame. We’ve seen how returning actors and cameo excitement can fuel major box office successes – Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Deadpool and Wolverine are the MCU’s three biggest post-Endgame movies, and all had that element. Evans’ Cap facing off with Downey Jr’s Doom would simply take it to a whole other level.

But does that mean it’s good? Evans is undeniably great in the role, and if there is a genuinely strong story there, then maybe it could work. However, it’s much easier to imagine it not working. This could be a scenario where his return feels cheap, and where the narrative and emotional weight of his Endgame ending, which was such a perfect conclusion to his MCU story, is irrevocably damaged. After all, how does it possibly grant him a conclusion that’s better than the one we got six years ago? Sure, Steve Rogers can do this all day, but maybe it’s better to just let the guy rest.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18th, 2026. It’ll be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17th, 2027. Before both of those, the next MCU movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which arrives on July 31st, 2026.
