Avengers: Doomsday Gets Surprising Filming Update (And We’re Confused)

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the most complex productions Marvel Studios has pulled off. Sporting a cast of at least 27 high-profile actors and an ambitious multiverse story that sees various superhero teams battle Doctor Doom, Doomsday features a lot of moving parts, presenting logistical challenges that would be a challenge for any director โ€” even Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Joe and Anthony Russo. Many fans are curious to see how exactly the filmmakers are going to land this plane, particularly since the Multiverse Saga lacks the narrative momentum and cohesion that was present in the Infinity Saga. But somehow, the Russos seem close to wrapping things up.

On X, the account Avengers Updates shared an image from an Avengers: Doomsday crew member sharing their wrap gift: artwork of Doctor Doom. “It’s been a wild, WILD ride,” the crew member’s caption reads, implying that Doomsday is gearing up to finish principal photography. Avengers: Doomsday Wrapping Is a Surprising Development

It wasn’t that long ago word got out that Avengers: Doomsday still didn’t have a completed script. Rebecca Romijn, who is reprising her role as Mystique from Fox’s X-Men movies, said she wasn’t sure if she was done shooting scenes for Doomsday because of the uncertainty surrounding the screenplay. With that in mind, some might find it surprising that Doomsday is getting ready to wrap now. Romijn made her comments in late July, but it still seemed like a lot about Doomsday remained in flux. That production is finishing up less than two months later could raise some questions.

One possibility is that Doomsday is just wrapping in one key location before moving on to another part of the shooting schedule, and Marvel decided to thank those crew members for their hard work. Of course, Doomsday has been in production since the spring; the record-breaking Doomsday chairs livestream event took place nearly six months ago. As a point of comparison, Avengers: Infinity War was in production for a period of six months, shooting from January to July in 2017. Six months is a long time to be filming one movie. The Russos might have cracked whatever was left for the script in the past month, allowing them to move quickly through the rest of production.

If Doomsday is wrapping soon, one of the biggest questions fans will have concerns the rest of the cast. Shortly after that aforementioned livestream in March, Kevin Feige revealed more Doomsday casting announcements would take place at a later date. Viewers are still waiting for official confirmation about who else is in the film, as rumors swirl about Ryan Reynolds’ involvement and Benedict Cumberbatch comments on Doctor Strange’s future. Marvel’s bypassed on opportunities to share additional details (skipping Hall H at Comic-Con), causing some to wonder when those reveals will happen. It would be poetic if the Russos threw a wrap party with another chairs livestream, bookending Doomsday production with casting announcements. But Marvel is very particular about when it shares information and could have something else in mind.

Principal photography may be wrapping soon, but this isn’t the end of the road for Avengers: Doomsday. The film will undoubtedly have pickups and reshoots as the picture comes into focus and the Russos figure out what needs to be changed. Those are standard parts of major Hollywood productions, especially one with as big of a cast as Doomsday. There’s still over a year before the film hits theaters, so it’ll be interesting to see what else comes out about Doomsday in the meantime.
