The film’s synopsis is as follows:
“A man (Joel Edgerton) learns that the evil stalking his family home may be only a prelude to horrors that come from within.
Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge.
Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.”
The film also stars Riley Keough, Carmen Ejogo, Christopher Abbot, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. and was directed by Trey Edwards.
Early reactions to the film sound promising, with one Twitter user saying the film “will f**k you up if you have kids. Or parents. Or a spouse. Or anyone you care about, really” while another user called it “terrific, uncompromising.”
Bloody Disgusting called the film a “haunting, post-apocalyptic fever dream.”
Last year, A24 released two of the most effective genre films of the year with The Witch and Green Room. The two films were drastically different, with one being a paranoia-fueled exploration of religion and the other being a siege thriller in the vein of Assault on Precinct 13.
The distributor also released Swiss Army Man, one of the most unique theatrical experiences of the year, blissfully exploring mortality and mental illness.
In 2015, Joel Edgerton wrote, directed, and starred in The Gift, an unconventional thriller about a man whose bullying past comes back to haunt him, keeping audiences guessing up until the film’s final scenes.
Between the early buzz, A24’s track record, and Edgerton’s commitment to the horror genre, It Comes At Night looks to be a contender for one of the best genre efforts of the year.
