The perfect Wolverine replacement for Hugh Jackman might have just been cast, but nobody has suggested this actor for the X-Men reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Australian actor Hugh Jackman debuted as Wolverine back in the original X-Men movie in 2000, which kick-started 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. He portrayed the clawed mutant until Logan in 2017, which explored his emotional demise, but he then reprised the role in Deadpool & Wolverine, bringing him into the MCU proper for the first time ever. Someone new will soon be taking over the role, however.

In September, the trailer for Insomniac Games’ upcoming video game, Marvel’s Wolverine, showcased the adventures of a new version of Wolverine, with motion capture and voice performed by Liam McIntyre. The trailer pits McIntyre’s Wolverine against the likes of Omega Red, Mystique, and many other villains, some of which have cybernetic enhancements. The trailer proves that Australian actor Liam McIntyre would be the perfect replacement for Hugh Jackman as a live-action Wolverine, and his previous superhero franchise experience makes this an even more exciting prospect.
While Marvel’s Wolverine will be the first step into the world of Marvel for Liam McIntyre, the actor has a wealth of experience in various DC projects. In the animated movies Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay (2018), Justice League Dark: Apokalips War (2020), Justice Society: World War II (2021). and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths (2024), McIntyre voiced the likes of George “Digger” Harkness’ Captain Boomerang, Arthur Curry’s Aquaman, and supervillain Johnny Quick. McIntyre even had a live-action DC role as Mark Mardon’s Weather Wizard in five episodes of The Flash on The CW, part of the Arrowverse franchise.
McIntyre’s past superhero franchise roles gives him the experience necessary to take on a role as legendary as Wolverine. James “Logan” Howlett is one of Marvel’s most popular and beloved characters, and Jackman’s portrayal is iconic, so Marvel Studios has a tall task when recasting. The MCU’s X-Men reboot – set to be directed by Jake Schreier – will surely introduce a new Wolverine, and Liam McIntyre has the physique, acting range, and versatility to pull off Wolverine, and the fact that he is still properly establishing himself means Marvel can take him and transform him into a household name.
As well as his DC roles, you may know Liam McIntyre from the likes of Them, Star Wars Resistance, Spartacus, and more. He’s perhaps best known for providing the motion capture for JD Fenix in the Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 video games, and these, as well as his upcoming performance in Marvel’s Wolverine, prove he is capable of capturing the brutality, aggression, but also kind-heartedness and soft underbelly of Wolverine. McIntyre would be an inspired choice to take over from Jackman in the MCU’s X-Men reboot.
